Except that he changes his vote away from his preference, so that the film with the most votes from everyone other than him ends up the victor.

I've never seen Big Deal. Looks promising.

Re: Vote time!
So we actually had a tie this round, ten votes to ten. I changed my vote at the very end to break the tie, so Big Deal on Madonna Street it is!

I'm glad, cause I already bought Welcome to Collinwood to view in comparison

Coincidentally, discussion for this round will start on the very day that Arrow's new deluxe edition of Sullivan's Travels comes out.

Which does make voting for it very tempting, but I'm going to stick with Fassbinder, whom I haven't watched a film of yet, and have wanted to.

Re: Let's Vote!
I was going to vote Fassbinder, but maybe a lavish new release will garner more discussion than a film from an OOP box set.

Fassbinder for me too. Haven't seen this and the fact that it's on HuluPlus makes it a no-brainer.

Re: Let's Vote!
Fassbinder. VV is a deliriously cinematic film, and it's been a long while since it's got much discussion (maybe not even in this incarnation of the forum). The Sturges is great too, of course, but with the lavish new release coming out I doubt it needs any leg up for discussion.

Re: Let's Vote!
I'm glad to see VV in the lead because I've been meaning to revisit the BRD trilogy for a couple of years (it's been ten years, and I remember Maria Braun most strongly), and with most of Fassbinder's films I feel like I need others' perspectives to fully appreciate them.
It would be great to see Sullivan's Travels chosen after we've had the chance to receive the Arrow release.

Re: Let's Vote!
I am mostly just hoping everyone will buy the Sturges so as to spur on an avalanche of future Arrow releases, but as long as everyone does that anyway, I'm okay with something else winning.

Agreed! Can't wait to get the release, and looking forward to discussing this. Once I have it.Gregory wrote:It would be great to see Sullivan's Travels chosen after we've had the chance to receive the Arrow release.

Back in September 2011, it looks like.
Barely any discussion in the thread, another reason for voting for it!

Re: Vote time!
I just read over the entire Magnificent Obsession thread after catching it on TCM (DVRed) a few weeks ago. Now I'm inclined to nab every Sirk I can, but don't really need to discuss that particular film. Glad to see how much love Lonesome has gotten, so hopefully if it wins we get a good discussion.
Aside from Zatochi, quite a canonical group of films, eh?

Note that only a few years ago, Lonesome could hardly have been considered canonical.Drucker wrote:Aside from Zatochi, quite a canonical group of films, eh?

Good point! Anyway I'm looking forward to revisiting Lonesome if it wins.

Re: Vote time!
In all my years of computing the year end lists, no Criterion release has ever been more universally acclaimed and loved than Lonesome, so at least we can surmise that most of us already own the goddamn thing and therefore have no excuse (I will eventually participate in some of these discussions, I just am waiting to actually get my hands on some of the titles I vote for!)

Re: Vote time!
A thought I've had about the film since first watching it is that the talking scenes aren't as bad as some make them out to be. I remember the manic pacing of the film as so quick, and the brief calms that those scenes bring, while disruptive, are almost ...in a perverse way...welcome. Also if I remember correctly, the moment the light-colored amusement park first appears the score hits an amazing crescendo which is magnificent. Love those silents with the original audio recording.
