Mr. Turner (Mike Leigh, 2014)

Per What's On Stage, Mike Leigh's Mr. Turner (bore me to tears with that title) had a preview screening over the weekend.
Timothy Spall gives a monumental, Charles Laughton-ish performance as the emotionally troubled and repressed 19th century Cockney landscape painter... Spall has been studying and painting for two years in preparation... some accurate cinematographic estimation of his revolutionary use of colour, light and sheer brush stroke vigour... I wouldn't be surprised at the end of the year, when the film goes on release, to hear people talking about one of the most beautiful, unsentimentally pictorial British films they've ever seen. It's great about art and critical argument, too, and as culturally, and as carefully, informative as was Leigh's glorious Gilbert and Sullivan movie, Topsy-Turvy.
As if I wasn't already excited for this one.

A quick look suggests that the reviews for Mr Turner are the polar opposite for Grace of Monaco. The Guardian seems typical of what I've seen.

Looks like being Mike Leigh's biggest hit in the UK. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I'm hoping my local cinema will actually show it considering its success.

And as per my note above, the reviews over here are extremely positive (to put it mildly). A lot of 5 stars being awarded.

I caught this at the NYFF and liked it quite a bit! It is very, very good, one of my favorites of the year, but I don't want to oversell it. I'd like to revisit it again before calling it one of Leigh's great films - there was a lot to take away from it and a lot that was impressive, but it's possibly a film that covers very familiar territory (the relationship artists have with their work, etc.) I don't want to pass judgment yet - I've seen this subject done so many times that it may be difficult to pick out all the subtle differences it may have with others. At the same time, it is a subject that I find endlessly enjoyable, regardless of how often I see it.
