the figure in the clue is almost identical to a still from the film, so as much as it could have been for Zissou it seems even more likely for the AlmodovarJgh8xxx wrote:Is anyone else thinking that the January newsletter clue that we all thought was for Almodovar's TIE ME UP, TIE ME DOWN was actually for THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU that was announced in February? Generally, clues have captured a very specific element of the film, such as its title or a key plot point. The figure in TIE ME UP, TIE ME DOWN is neither of these things. I'm thinking we shouldn't expect the Almodovar (especially since he doesn't have a phantom page,) and check off the January newsletter clue as having been announced.

Um, if you think the clue isn't specific, then you haven't been following the discussion. Stills from the film were posted that were an exact match to a very precise image the only tiny alteration of which in the Criterion drawing turned out to be a pun based on the film's title. It's definitely Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!.

Huh! I actually had been following the discussion but it's been a few months xxx. I'm very happy to be wrong about this; the Almodovar (and his addition to the collection) is one of the thigns I've been most excited for. Perhaps we should expect this announcement today then? With a Mungiu or two and maybe a Chaplin? August is generally one of the label's showcase months.warren oates wrote:Um, if you think the clue isn't specific, then you haven't been following the discussion. Also, unless I missed something, not having a phantom page does not mean a title or director is not coming.

No, he doesn't have a phantom page, he has an actual page because he is a producer on del Toro's The Devil's Backbone which has already been released by Criterion.I'm thinking we shouldn't expect the Almodovar (especially since he doesn't have a phantom page,)

I wouldn't be surprised if that set was what has been holding up Eraserhead this whole time. Criterion might have everything they need except for Lynch's final seal of approval.Finch wrote:Whatever Criterion announce tonight won't give me goosebumps in the same way that this did earlier today.
I'd wager a release within September through December 2014. Probably October, given the fact that it's Eraserhead.

Doesn't really jibe with this though.Yaanu wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if that set was what has been holding up Eraserhead this whole time. There's a Simon of the Desert poster in a wildly different style in a picture Criterion put on their tumblr, so I'm gonna guess that's getting an upgrade.

I hope if that happens then they'll upgrade The Exterminating Angel too.

Oh man, how I'd love to see Bad Timing upgraded too. We already know there's a U.K. Blu-ray coming in the fall so it would make sense that there's a good new HD transfer around.

I'm guessing we're not getting announcements today since they seem to prefer Mondays and Fridays. Remember the fabled days of 14th announcements? Oh what a time that was!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Announcements have been coming pretty consistently for the last several months about an hour from now on whatever day they're supposed to come out. But there are also consistently at least a few "Guess they're not coming today" comments around now, so I don't know why I'm complaining.

I checked Criterion's Facebook and they haven't done their usual "What do YOU hope to see with today's announcements" post, so I don't think it will happen. I hope I'm wrong, though!

I feel like they've been sliding a bit later... I always expect them around 5 EST, as if they push them to the site on their way out of the office that night, but the last few had me thinking they were working later hours than usual.swo17 wrote:Announcements have been coming pretty consistently about an hour from now on whatever day they're supposed to come out. I can't remember a month in the last several years where the announcements didn't come on the 15th unless either:domino harvey wrote:I checked Criterion's Facebook and they haven't done their usual "What do YOU hope to see with today's announcements" post, so I don't think it will happen. 1) the 15th was on a weekend or a holiday, obviously
2) they announced earlier in the day that announcements wouldn't be ready that day.
