Sorry if this has been mentioned before. Does anybody knows if Criterion own the rights of Jean VigoÂ´s L'Atalante and Zero for Conduct? The New Yorker edtion of L'Atalante is out of print, and Zero for Conduct has never been release on Dvd.

Home Vision release "Zero for Conduct" on VHS a long while back, so Criterion probably has the option for releasing the film on DVD. "Zero" was one of the shorts we bandied about as a possible half-priced disc in the wake of their release of "Night and Fog."

I've heard nothing suggesting anyone other than New Yorker has the rights to "L'Atalante" though. Sorry.

What leads you to this conclusion? If it's DVD Planet listing it as "discontinued," that is not to be trusted. All of the Image-owned online retailers (DVD Planet, Deep Discount DVD, and Digital Eyes) have, for some reason, stopped carrying New Yorker DVDs.

True. I wanted to buy Bresson's L'Argent with the Deep Discount DVD 20% off supersale, but couldn't find it. Amazon lists both L' Atalante and L'Argent at $26.99. Just have to pay a little more. Does anybody own this editions? Are they worth buying?

I nearly choked on my tea this morning when I discovered that my newspaper, the Sydsvenskan, devoted two full pages to Criterion today. There are no hard facts in there that people on this board don't already know, but there's a nice overview of the company and the evolution of a niche market for cinephiles, plus a separate article on Fanny and Alexander. Johanna Schiller reveals a fondness for the films of Lukas Moodysson -- but she doesn't say Criterion are actually planning to release them or anything, only that his first two films are something she wouldn't mind working on.

I did some research and found out that Image used to own DVD Planet until September 2003. You can read more here.

I have no doubt that you should have an easy time grabbing a new copy of NY'ers L'Atalante-- I have a hard time believing they let one of their flagship discs go OOP after such a short time. I still see it on shelves here in NYC constantly.

I own it-- problem being having grabbed it before THE JEAN VIGO COLLECTION came out from BFI, which has not only this incredibly beautiful and totally fucking hilarious film, but Zero... (I have the HVE Janus VHS which is quite nice for a VHS), L'Apropos Nice, plus the swimmer doc... in other words, everything Vigo made. If you have an all-region player, grab it. Only problem with NY'er is some cropping on sides, and improper conversion from Pal to NTSC, leading to ghosting in the relevantly-crammed (to make up the time) frames. Check DVDBeaver.com for a good comparison between the two L'Atalante's.

Newbie here. I have sporadic internet access, so if this is a repeat question, please excuse me.

A while back, Hal Hartley gave an interview where he casually mentioned that Criterion had been sending him gifts (Fanny & Alexander, if I recall correctly). This would suggest that they're trying to work with Hartley, and it seems most logical that they would release Trust since it's his most popular and it lacks any DVD release. Has this rumor ever been confirmed?

Also, is there a FAQ about licenses and Criterion's relationship with the various studios, etc. for this forum?

I posted this reply I got from Hal Hartley's website a while back:

Hi Criterionsnob, Criterion would love to release Trust on DVD, and we
would love to have them do it. We just need to get Paramount (the US
rights holders) to agree to license it to Criterion, which is an uphill
battle and will definitely not happen before the end of 2005. Something
might happen next year though. In the meantime, it will be released in
France and Australia this year.

Hal Hartley is o.k. for a Criterion release. I liked Henry Fool. But please, no Coen Brothers or Todd Solondz! They create art for the simple-minded ---Apart from Miller's Crossing and Blood Simple (both masterpieces) or Welcome to the Dollhouse, I hope the rest of their stuff is not given the Criterion format...If The Big Lebowski or Happiness are released I'm never buying another Criterion DVD!

Thanks for the heads-up re: Hartley. Again I must ask: Is there a FAQ for Criterion and different rights-holders/distributors? I would love to at least understand some of the bad blood (like between Criterion and Paramount) before I post stupid questions.

I went to a David Cronenberg Q&A last night at the Lincoln Center. Someone asked him about a Crash Criterion DVD and he said he believed there already was one. Someone pointed out that there was a laserdisc, but he said again that there is a dvd, though it may be out of print. Awkward situation for all of us that knew that wasn't true. But perhaps he was just confused because (here's hoping) he already worked on a Criterion DVD for it and believed it had been released but it hasn't yet.

Just goes to show that Cronenberg doesn't obsess about the availability of his films on DVD. I'm glad he has more important things to worry about (i.e. making new films).
