Woohoo! Doubly excellent since this points highly towards Criterion doing their own scan rather than that DNR'd to hell transfer used on the UK release! This is among my favorite horror movies - and I have great hopes for the future bluray.

Costco publishes a monthly magazine for members and the current issue features an article about the Criterion Collection in the arts/entertainment section:

http://www.costcoconnection.com/connection/201406#pg66" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Only two new bits of info. It was musicians Patti Smith and Adam Yauch that put the pressure on Criterion to work on Judex.

The article details a visit to the Criterion office. In one room they were working on Judex; Hearts and Minds in another. Wes Anderson and Peter Becker were in the screening room screening an unnamed film. Pretty easy to read between the lines on this and say that the Moonrise Kingdom disc is currently in production and should be solicited sometime in the next few months. They were able to get a nice quote from Wes praising the collection.

Maybe Moonrise Kingdom will be #750?

The article states that Costco currently sells 19 Criterion titles. I don't remember seeing any there in the handful of times that I've been in one. Has anyone ever spotted any of these?

Seven Samurai and the Hitchcock titles are available in MN (or at least were last week).

Today my local Costco was generously stocked with -- I didn't count, but it might well have been close to 19 titles. In addition, they've been stocking the individual Universal Hitchcock releases as well as the Fox/MGM ones, and they even had the old Image "Capricorn One" DVD.

They didn't increase shelf space, but they moved Disney releases to a separate display near the front of the store, so the "regular" section, what there is of it, sure looked nice for a change. And you know what? People were standing there browsing these things. A nice change, real nice, from the barren months we've endured there this past year or two.

I also spotted all the Wes Anderson titles save for Darjeeling, Blow Out, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Great Dictator, all the Hitchcocks, and Frances Ha during my trip.

I love how Costco uses the term "bromance" in discussing the relationship between Wes Anderson and Peter Becker. Appropriately trashy.

I see Moonrise Kingdom coming next spring. That will put it at the 3 year mark of it's theatrical release which was the timeframe for The Darjeeling Limited, and three years is probably the deal worked out with Fox Searchlight.

Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol. 6

#861 Post by sir_luke »

At a rate of three new spine numbers per month, #750 would come up around March, which matches what you're saying, Frau. For once in my life I've made a reasonable prediction!
Unless my math is majorly wrong, which is absolutely a possibility.

You need to take into account the assumption we will be getting a heavy amount of boxsets over the next 3-4 months. So one boxset gets you a couple of spines in addition to other new releases.

Good theory, and probably accurate to the timeline, but Moonrise Kingdom is actually Focus Features/Universal.

If Wes Anderson was in the office approving the transfer in the last month; I would think it would be out sooner than next spring.

Is there any reason to think that a blu-ray upgrade of Knife in the Water may not be far off? The only evidence I can find of a restoration or HD transfer is the Italian blu-ray.

They seem to be big into Polanski, and with Macbeth coming anytime now, Knife seems a good bet for an upgrade somewhere down the line, materials permitting.

Does this mean we can count on "Don't Look Now" coming from CC? Or is this just idle conjecture? It is cruel and unusual punishment to post titles like this if it's just a perhaps!

Unfortunately, CriterionCast postings alone aren't proof enough. I don't listen to their podcast, so I can't say anything about that.
But consider it a rumor anyways.

Did you guys totally miss the post by Ryan on this very page? He states that a Criterion employee recently posted online a picture of themselves handling the negative of Don't Look Now.

On the Criterion FB page today, there were posts featuring - respectively - the original theatrical trailer for Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and Dick Cavett's interview with John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Ben Gazzara; as you know they were the stars of Cassavetes' Husbands. Looks like some more rumors are afoot!

I'll be first to pre-order a correctly color-balanced Do the Right Thing blu-ray if they get to produce one. I've always kinda assumed that would never happen, though, frankly.

Back in March, Caitlin Kuhwald tweeted:
I've been informed that Joel and Ethan Coen were apparently raving about my To Be Or Not To Be cover!
Reaching here, but I'm guessing that her informer was someone at Criterion who is working with the Coens, and whichever Coen brothers film Criterion has licensed (Barton Fink?) is finally happening.

They are starting to roll out a new batch of Fox titles with All that Jazz in August and presumably The Innocents in October. It's pretty reasonable to think Barton Fink is finally in production. I would also keep an eye out for My Darling Clementine. Scorsese's film foundation restored both All That Jazz and My Darling Clementine last year. The Clementine resto is still mia on home video.
