Chris, does the book contain the controversial explanation chapter?

heh, with the addition of Red River and Picnic at Hanging Rock there might be enough "giant book included" criterion editions to fill out a film club ballot now.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
Admittedly i'm not super familiar with the book but it only goes to chapter 17 and the few sites I hit say that extended ending was chapter 18, so no.domino harvey wrote:Chris, does the book contain the controversial explanation chapter?

Judex is 3 discs now? Last I checked Criterions website still said a 2-disc set. Any idea for the change?

Could it be to accommodate the two short films that were added after the initial announcement?

judex looks absolutely stunning. it wouldn't be too farfetched to consider nuits rouge to be released in the future, considering moc did (along with judex and eyes without a face). can't wait to see it again.

That's how it appears, allowing the film more room to breathe on the DVD (both discs are dual-layer.)sir_luke wrote:Could it be to accommodate the two short films that were added after the initial announcement?

It will be interesting to see if the DVD only release of Judex stays at 1-Disc and drops the bonus short films or if that now becomes a 2-Disc release.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I think the idea of these recent DVD-only releases is to make them a low-cost, barebones alternative. I would think that they've cut these features specifically to ensure a one disc release. If a DVD buyer is looking for a stacked release, they'll have to shell out the money for the Dual-format edition.captveg wrote:It will be interesting to see if the DVD only release of Judex stays at 1-Disc and drops the bonus short films or if that now becomes a 2-Disc release.

Interesting. Of all the digipacks they've released, why just Night of the Hunter?

Probably because that's the one they recently took out of print to rerelease with new packaging, so unlike most other digipaks it's simple for them to sell the new case and cover.

probably because it's a good seller and the digi print run sold out. much cheaper to release it in the scanovo. it's a shame because the digi is one of the most beautiful.rwaits wrote:Interesting. Of all the digipacks they've released, why just Night of the Hunter?

And also probably because its construction was much more prone to damage than other digis, leading to lots of customers not unhappy with their online purchases (much more than with regular digis).

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
With the recent news of separating out the DVDs from the Blu-Rays again, I wonder if these few triple-disc Scanovo releases (Judex, Hearts and Minds, etc) will amount to a brief blip in Criterion's timeline.
It would appear that future triple-disc releases, in either format, are open to the possibility of plastic cases. Perhaps digipacks will become more rare than before dual-format, and only needed when accommodating thicker booklets or books (like Picnic at Hanging Rock)?

Given that the three-disc BD-size cases are virtually indistinguishable from the two- or one-disc BD-size cases, that will more than likely be the case. The hard part is releasing enough material in a single package to justify three BDs.acroyear wrote:With the recent news of separating out the DVDs from the Blu-Rays again, I wonder if these few triple-disc Scanovo releases (Judex, Hearts and Minds, etc) will amount to a brief blip in Criterion's timeline.

To be fair, they are visibly thicker than regular Scanavo cases (1 or 2 discs).Yaanu wrote:Given that the three-disc BD-size cases are virtually indistinguishable from the two- or one-disc BD-size cases, that will more than likely be the case.
In the whole collection of BDs Criterion released, I don't even think there's more than 10 releases justifying more than 2 BDs. I mean, they even managed to put the whole Etaix set on 2 BDs !Yaanu wrote:The hard part is releasing enough material in a single package to justify three BDs.
And I don't see Criterion doing boxsets like Rossellini / Bergman or Trilogy of Life in Scanavo cases.

Only by a few millimeters, so I've heard. But I don't have any on hand to compare.tenia wrote:To be fair, they are visibly thicker than regular Scanavo cases (1 or 2 discs).
That's what I mean. Most BD sets have managed to stay under two discs, and Criterion generally tries to match up box sets when possible; if it requires a box for a DVD release, it'll get a box set on BD.tenia wrote:In the whole collection of BDs Criterion released, I don't even think there's more than 10 releases justifying more than 2 BDs. I like the look of The Innocents cover, but the way her hands are chopped off seems weird to me.
