Holloween and the month of October has made me think of ghosts, goblins and cross dressers, so I feel inspired.
Here it goes....
The Vanishing
Tootsie
Mulholland Drive
The Cure
A Matter of Life and Death

Any possibility for Visconti's Vaghe Stelle dell Orsa (aka Sandra)??

Isn't it a bit early to be guessing? Oh well...

I'm guessing Apu and the Road Trilogy will be the big Nov/Dec end-of-year boxes, a la Trilogy of Life/Qatsi or Zatoichi/World Cinema. I'm hoping October will become a "box upgrade month" with Tati following last years Cassavetes.

Have to disagree. They are announcing Oct releases next week! There's no way this restoration will be done and ready to send to disc within 2 months. And what about the probable theatrical run?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
How many Ray films screenings had happened in USA in last two years? If I am not wrong, the answer is multiple times.Drucker wrote: And what about the probable theatrical run?
Out of all the restoration works (multiple, right?) available in USA, they are going for a restoration done in Italy!
Criterion knows that their followers already know about the probable Criterion releases of these films (especially after last years Time Of India article). Criterion is using this picture to let the followers know that they have just started the restoration works from scratch.
I won't expect to see this getting released this year, but I will probably die of joy if that happens this year. Also, I remember that they replied to a post on their page last month, where they indicated clearly that the works on the trilogy is far from being finished. Anyways, they should have released this set long ago.

Well, that should give us time for another couple of Ray films in the meantime.Drucker wrote:Have to disagree. They are announcing Oct releases next week! There's no way this restoration will be done and ready to send to disc within 2 months. And what about the probable theatrical run?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Universal is releasing a "complete" Spielberg boxset in September. It features all of their Spielberg films except for Munich. (Sugarland Express; Duel; 1941 are all new to R1 blu via this box). It seems odd that Munich is the only Spielberg film that has yet to be released on blu and is missing from the big Universal boxset.
I wonder if maybe they licensed the film to Criterion. Kind of reminds me of what Fox did with their Coen titles; keeping Barton Fink MIA but releasing the rest. (Fink being strongly rumored to have been licensed to Criterion)

Schindler's List is missing too. Someone in the Universal thread suggested it may not fit the more "fun" narrative of the films included and they might be saving it for a 10th anniversary release next year

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Their Facebook account just uploaded a picture of the old Carrie laserdisc with the rather teasing note "SISTERS wasn’t the first Brian De Palma film in the Criterion Collection…"
Hm. Hm. HMMM.
If they are doing another De Palma, I'm secretly hoping for Femme Fatale (the original, barebones disc is now out of print in the US) but it's a WB title, so unlikely.

While I wouldn't put much stock in what Criterion puts on Facebook, considering that they are always throwing around pictures for movies they don't have the rights to, it made me remember this image from the New Years clue:

While the bloody ("damned") spot looks in hindsight like an obvious clue for Macbeth, did we ever figure out who the girl with the stringy hair in her face might be? It could indeed be Carrie. I would love for this to happen, as the movie is in need of a good restoration/transfer. It's worth noting this little tidbit from the Scream Factory thread last year:

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Besides being a former laserdisc title; we already know that MGM had licensed this out to Scream Factory/Shout! but that deal fell apart over access to the film elements and creating a new hidef transfer. it's not hard to imagine MGM licensing this out (again) to Criterion. In ffact we know they've picked up another big batch of MGM titles.
Somewhat unrelated but does anyone have any info about the falling out between Shout! and Universal? From what I hear; Universal will never work with Shout again and there is some bad blood there. Was it the shitty transfers on titles like Cat People or that Chucky box that fell through?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
A guy that works on Fangoria's website tweeted the following:
Don May said that Synapse tried to license some titles from Universal and were rejected, only to see Universal announce some of the titles (Firestarter, People Under the Stairs), so maybe Universal saw how successful Scream Factory's releases have been and decided that they should release their 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s cult/horror titles themselves.
Obviously, if true, it'll be announced on Tuesday, and not in August.Spoiler Alert: Very trusted source says THE BROOD hits Criterion Blu-ray 10/21/14. Announcement to hit first week of August. 4K restoration.
The falling out can't be too bad as Universal is letting them include Halloween 2 and 3 in the Complete Halloween box set (something that I can't imagine was included in the original deal.)ianungstad wrote:Somewhat unrelated but does anyone have any info about the falling out between Shout! and Universal? Criterion's laserdisc of Carrie was released open matte at DePalma's request. Get ready for all hell to break loose at Home Theater Forum and for Jeff Wells to proclaim victory for truth, justice, and The American Way if that decision is repeated.
In the era of 16:9 TVs, I'd imagine DePalma (like James Cameron and The Ghost Of Stanley Kubrick) will have had a change of heart or they'll include both ratios.
Criterion also has a commentary track with Laurent Bouzereau and screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The Huffington Post wrote an article late in 2012 about a loaded blu ray box set of the Blake Edwards/Peter Sellers Pink Panther films that was in the works. Supposedly it was to be released in 2013 for the Pink Panther's 50th Anniversary but obviously that never materialized. Project may have been canned but it would be good if that was handed off to Criterion as one of these new MGM projects. Not sure if MGM would license these films out though. The old Pink Panther blu has been OOP for ages and goes for big bucks.
I do think that girl is suppose to be Carrie. People were guessing The Ring which made no sense since Paramount licensed the Japanese original and the remake to Warner Brothers and they are both very much in print. I don't know if Polan reads these forums but you might want to keep the clues relevant to the movies being teased. All that Jazz is a slang term and has nothing to do with a jazz band or jazz music. Carrie also doesn't scrub out blood stains or comb her hair over her face. Some of his worst clues ever (if those are the films being teased)

It was also guessed that the girl could be the mother from Tarkovsky's The Mirror. Which, if you look at the screencap of that particular scene, is pretty convincing.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'd bet my life that today he would only want it in 16x9/1.85:1 and that his decision to release it open matte 20 years ago had nothing to do with preserving some lost directorial intent, but rather as you surmise, to avoid presenting the film with black bars on 4:3 sets.Jeff wrote:Criterion's laserdisc of Carrie was released open matte at DePalma's request. Yes, after doing a Google image search just now, I do find the clue more convincing for The Mirror than for Carrie.sir_luke wrote:It was also guessed that the girl could be the mother from Tarkovsky's The Mirror. Which, if you look at the screencap of that particular scene, is pretty convincing.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I've always thought the girl was pretty clearly for Sisters. Holding a knife, hair obscuring face... and it seems much more likely than The Ring rightswise.
