Do you think it will really be in box form with only two films, or will they simply be paired spines?

Yeah, maybe with a box/slipcase similar to the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set or Complete Monterey Pop Festival.

I would also say that these westerns were a safe bet for November, even before this news. There seems to be a pattern with the Newsletter Clues going on. January & February's hints were announce for August, March's for September, April's for October. So now, if the Hellman Westerns (May's hint) are announced for November, I think It Happened One Night has got to be coming in December.

Hate to be that guy but what about Midnight Cowboy? That clue was a while ago and haven't seen anything from it. Unless the sick mouse was meant for something else.

Probably pushed back; along with Tootise to allow the participation of Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman is recovering from cancer.

With Pathe's announcement of a Blu-ray release of Raymond Bernard's Wooden Crosses a.k.a. Les croix de bois (1932), I can start dreaming to have our first Eclipse upgrade soon. They have already released Les Miserables last year. This could be the ideal Eclipse set for Criterion to begin the imminent upgradation. What do you guys think? I hope that I am not the only dreamer here.

Considering the amount of attention being paid to Eclipse at the moment, I can't imagine an upgrade of that is on their radar. Just get the French discs! Aren't they region free?

Region is no barrier for me, I can't read French. Just in case, if there is a booklet, I will not be able to read it. Damn, I will not be able to read the back cover too  . I understand your point, but not releasing these two on blu-rays will be utter foolishness.

I could see CC releasing the Bernards as stand alones before they have an "Eclipse" blu ray set. Especially, if they want to add supplements.

Yeah, if they ever do upgrade an Eclipse set, the Bernard is not going to be on the top of the list.

But if they wanted a release to tie in with the 100th anniversary of the First World War, they could do worse than releasing one of the very best films on that subject. However I suppose that they do have four years in which to do so if they wanted!

CC Spine #1GRAND ILLUSION could contend for an ideal WW1 anniversary upgrade, but sadly it has slipped out of Criterion's grasp & back to the Studio Canal parent...

Rialto is a touring a new restoration of Cy Endfield's Zulu. There is a Cy Endfield phantom page, so perhaps this heading to Criterion.

If they do it won't be for around another 3 years since I just bought the Twilight Time edition that came out not too long ago.

Tells you how much I pay attention to Twilight Time. Could CC piggyback TT like they have done with some Universal titles. Ex, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Brazil amongst others?

No, one of TT's terms is that they have full US exclusivity for three years.

Also, a Rialto theatrical release doesn't mean that Criterion can opt for a home video release of that title. That relationship is long dead.

Universal is a rights holder who's chosen to license in-print titles to CC. TT owns nothing.

I'm not going to make a full slate of predictions for this Friday. Except I do think the Mulholland Drive will get announced for Nov to take advantage of the B&N sale or December in time for the Christmas/Hanakkah gift giving season. Because nothing says Christmas/Hanakkah like a David Lynch film.

Time Bandits will probably be announced over the next two 15ths as well.

Source..for those who haven't seen it.

If they expect the Lynch to be a huge seller, surely that's an incentive for them to wait to release it after the B&N sale? Normally Criterion would be taking part of the hit on a big branded promotion like that.

It is highly unlikely that Criterion absorbs the cost of any retailer's sale-- BN pays the same price and sells them at close to a loss, but still enough profit somewhere in the chain of purchase to make them continue (and like any loss leader, the idea is to get you into the store and purchase something else with your sale Criterions, or add a non-Criterion to your online order, etc)

They do always seem to release something big that comes out just in time to be part of the B&N sale (usually a box set).

I know this was briefly discussed here, but I think this Cannes Classics website makes it clear that Sergei Parajanov's Sayat Nova is coming from the World Cinema Project.
The Film Foundation and the World Cinema Project in New York have funded a restoration of the film which has been remastered in 4K by L’immagine Ritrovata.
I know it is not listed on the WCF website, but if I remember correctly they have always been very lax at keeping the information on it up to date. Since the print premiered at Cannes and Venice this year, we likely can expect it as a 2014 restoration. It also would help explain the phantom page for Parajanov.

I speculated about this a while back, but swo pointed out that the WCF and the WCP are not the same thing. WTF?
