This would be incredible. I would be more interested in a package of a period in cinema or a film movement than a specific director.

If it were Lotte Eisner's Murnau, I'd pay about 150 pounds without the movies.

back when i was in school 15 years ago, my university's library had a hardcover copy of eisner's "murnau." i used it to write a paper on murnau for a "europe between the wars" class that i took. i remember thinking at the time that i should've just kept it and paid the fine for "losing" it. :-" i'm sure it's long gone by now. ](*,)

I mean, there's a copy in the UMass library, but it seems rude (to say the least) to take away the ability to read it from everyone else.

true, but i'd be lying if said that the notion that "somebody's eventually going to do it, so it may as well be me" didn't cross my mind.

anyhow, i'll just say in closing that i'm very much looking forward to "haunted screens: german cinema in the 1920s" coming to lacma at the end of next month. \:D/

I'm surprised that University of California Press doesn't seem to have done yet what a number of other academic presses have the past several years and start using print-on-demand technology to make OOP books from their backlist available again. Fortunately, many libraries still have the book. I hope no one will steal them, as there's really no need: getting my own copy only required about 15 minutes at a photocopier, printing double-sided pages, held together with a small binder clip in the corner. Not exactly an attractive volume, but it works.

I'd certainly be up for supporting an MoC box-set similar to MichaelB's upcoming Arrow release, or even just single disc BDs. I'm actually less inclined to be interested in things with coffee table books or ornate packaging. I just want great films on great discs

Here's another vote along that line. For whatever demographic I represent: I have enjoyed putting together substantial vinyl and CD collections and was a pushover for fancy packaging for both. Now I am interested almost entirely in film, and have no interest in over-sized books, packaging that emulates pizza boxes or little pieces of luggage, or that include reproduction ephemera. I wish the producer's money had been spent on additional quality titles instead.

I love my Potemkine Epstein and Rohmer sets, the MoC Mizoguchi, and even the more bare-bones Robbe-Grillet approach. These suit me perfectly.

The days of selling big-package Special Editions with cast resin doodads in BestBuy are, or should be, dwindling. Increasingly, expensive BD titles are the domain of more serious viewers/collectors and I'm not sure how many of us want novelty stuffing, even if it intends to be beautiful or academic. I would prefer to be spared the extra cost and the gilt associated with getting no enjoyment from the Specialness.

There is something in between which should be fine. I mean, it's nice to see some neat special editions, with a big book, a soundtrack CD, or stuff like this. What Arrow was doing with their old "white" packages is something which seemed right to me (reversible covers, booklet, poster).
The Rohmer set is this type of in-between special editions.

But I don't want t oget an umbrella with Singin' In The Rain ! Or a passport reproduction with Casablanca !

Probably from the same restoration/master, but will be a different encode for sure (and apparently Cohen's Thief has the frame issue many Kino blus have).

Seems likely. Divisa has already released those two in Spain, both use Cohen's restorations.

Didn't he dismiss Gremillon as well sometime or maybe it's just my paranoia ? Whatever,I hope the Pathe deal with the Bernard may lead to La Petite Lise getting its deserved full blown treatment. (No pun intended re image manipulation)
