Never thought the dancers were for The Party because there is no phantom page for Blake Edwards.

Surely some films have been announced before without their director first having a phantom page?

I'm not sure that is true in recent times.

Could the shrubs have been for L'Avventure? If you watch the CC trailer for the film there are sequences around the cliff that have little shrubs scattered around.

The whole scene of an island beach with sheer cliffs could well have been a hint for L'Avventura. I think this is maybe the most "fulfilled" new year's hint they've done since they started the thing. Usually there are 2-3 titles that don't make it out, but this year the only clue I think we haven't seen come to light is the red sun (with some "maybes" like the x on the cliff and the party possibly meaning something beyond Il Sorpasso).

Dare we hope for another WCF box with A Brighter Summer Day in December?

I think A Brighter Summer Day is popular enough for Criterion to issue it as a standalone release.

Any ideas about a Deer Hunter release, or more specifically, where it was touted?

The deer was from All That Heaven Allows

I was under the impression that the X was thought to represent Kurosawa's CURE, which has been up on Hulu for a while.

What I right or was I right? :D

L'Avventura & L'Eclisse BRs in the same year - fantastic.

Brighter Summer Day certainly could handle a standalone release, but I'm sure it's going to get dictated by whatever deal CC has with the WCF, which might want its own branding on the release and/or use it to drive purchases of other titles they could package it with.

I picture that it can handle a standalone release, but perhaps they do it like they recently did for Love Streams in that the packaging is essentially the same, but for a separate entry.

I never understood that. The so-called 'X' on the cliff just looks to me like detailing of the drawing, and besides looks nothing like the 'X' from Cure.
As much as I'd love to see Criterion release it, and other Kiyoshi Kurosawa's on BD, to me it's only ever seemed like wish fulfillment.

Well Cure is on Hulu, so it will probably be released at some point. But I agree that it's unclear whether the X is really the Cure X or just part of the cliff face, which is why I called it a "maybe" clue.

Has anyone put together the band and the flapper girl as a Jazz thing for "All That Jazz"?
Also, have the previous clues been corrected to show what everything really turned out to be?

I think the only unaccounted for clues are the red sun and the red scarf. Everything else can be explained away, even some of the rather long bows that were drawn (i.e. the bushes = L'AVVENTURA).

Re: The "red sun" in the 2014 New Year's Drawing.

There was initially speculation that it was either "Red Sun" or "A Brighter Summer Day". I don't know that it was ever resolved what it was a clue for. I've just gone through the list of 2014 Criterion releases and didn't spot anything obvious in retrospect. Anyone have a good match?
