They seem very embarrassed that they're releasing a Sydney Pollack film, but near ecstatic that they're releasing Tootsie.

Is that the smallest font Criterion has used for a filmmaker?

It's like a bad dream seeing new posts in this thread on announcement day and then clicking on it just to see Tootsie AGAIN.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I like the idea of the title falling out of one of the sky holes in Time Bandits, but that font does not fit with the old hand-drawn poster at all.
Safe is pretty good, even if it's a little like someone just stuck a CD cover on a DVD box.

I like Safe's cover. It works as a great visual metaphor for the boundaries of the world closing in tighter and tighter. Though inevitably that means its central image is also a spoiler for the:

Eek though, that zombie Julianne Moore with the gross welt seems like a tough sell. Time Bandits needs to reduce the amount of fonts in play.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
FYI, in the sell sheets The Night Porter looks the same as the old cover, just with the new branding instead of the banner. It has a big "Cover not final" in the corner, though, so obviously it's changing.

I like the Time Bandits cover, but that title font is horrible. Somebody needs to change that quick!
Safe also looks good, even though I haven't seen the film, so I can't comment on how well the cover resembles it.

SAFE is another criminally underwhelming cover (no doubt John Gall is the perp again). The film has a rich visual palette that's not served by that cut-and-paste cover.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
Safe's okay, and makes thematic sense, but I probably would have preferred a cover that utilized the film's compositional strategy of crushing Moore awkwardly into the corner of the frame. This design sort of has its cake and eats it by giving her a de facto big star head dead-centre.
And I assume Morning for the Osone Family is about the antics of dwarf jewel thief.

I absolutely love it but I'm not sure I can entirely defend that position coherently if pressed.

The image is stunning for sure, but the font seems a bit off to me. Then again I haven't actually seen the film, so perhaps that would make it make more sense? All the posters I've seen are more like the old treatment.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
Neither Pépé nor Jubal features a topless woman covering her breast with an above-the-elbow black leather gloved hand, though. Just like the previous cover, Criterion probably knew exactly what they were doing but are above reproach for providing mere titillation because that's the iconic image for this film (more so the earlier cover). Smart cover.
By the way, I remember when Pépé came out, the cover got lots of criticism for being too gaudy. (Why do I remember these things when I can't even remember the things I need to remember?)

A downgrade cover for sure, though it was never in danger of getting purchased by me so it doesn't matter
