I was hoping that the New Year's drawing was a meta-clue for "A Brighter Summer Day" in WCF II, but looks like no dice for 2014.SpiderBaby wrote:can't say I'm looking forward to anything as much as those films restored by the WCF. This is little off the current topic. Now, as they are back to separate BD and DVD editions, I would love to see some of those barebone, low priced BDs (as they did for Letter Never Sent, The Organizer, The Ballad of Narayama) getting released in coming days. We did not get a single in 2014.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I wonder how these sell. To me this seems like a great way to get titles out that otherwise would be neglected and only on Hulu Plus. Considering most of the titles they've released, that's what I see was attempted. No extras is a totally worthwhile compromise to get me Letter Never Sent on BD, for example. But with the dearth of Eclipse titles and titles on the lower-price point line, I have to wonder if these are just a hard sell for Criterion. Eclipse is DVD only which certainly turns some off. And how easy is it to get excited on a title with no special features (as opposed to the likes of Il Sorpasso and Investigation of a Citizen Under Suspicion?)chatterjees wrote:This is little off the current topic. Just thinking out loud, but it's a shame we can't get more titles like the ones they were releasing at that price-point.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I think going DF was the main reason they stopped releasing those barebones this year. They should reboot this stratedy. I could have easily bought the Late Ray films or the Kinoshita titles on barebone BDs.
The two titles you mentioned, Il Sorpasso and Investigation of a Citizen Under Suspicion, are heavy weight candidates. One is a Oscar winner and the other one was an Italian blockbuster. People might have expected extra features for them. So, releasing them as barebone couldn't have been a great idea. PLus, both of them were part of their short lived DF venture. price point could have been an issue for them.
I will be buying the Dec Kinoshita Eclipse set for sure, but honestly speaking, I was disappointed again to see them on DVD (as I was for the Late Ray). I just regret to see their fates being sealed like this. Honestly, how reasonable it is to even think of BD upgrades for the titles from the great Eclipse series (there are few exceptions, hopefully those will be out soon on BD). Let's just hope that wee will see some more barebone BDs in future

No, theres much better questions to be asked, like "Is [confirmed title] coming?", "More by [popular director]?, and "Is [very specific rumored title that they wouldn't possibly confirm either way] coming?"ptatler wrote:I hope someone thinks to ask them about:FrauBlucher wrote:The night before the next announcement day will be the Wexner talks.

The status of the WCF relationship is certainly an important question that relates to the potential release of dozens of films, so hopefully that gets precedence over "When is Bottle Rocket coming?" types of questions.

No, those tend to work out okay too. We got Bicycle Thieves and the War Trilogy confirmed that way last year (the latter appears to be finally panning out in the next few months, and the former had just recieved a 4K scan at the time so I can't imagine is too far off from an announcement).MongooseCmr wrote:No, theres much better questions to be asked, like "Is [confirmed title] coming?", "More by [popular director]?, and "Is [very specific rumored title that they wouldn't possibly confirm either way] coming?"ptatler wrote:I hope someone thinks to ask them about:FrauBlucher wrote:The night before the next announcement day will be the Wexner talks.

It's unlikely that people going will be on this forum but I do hope they ask about Costa-Gavras' stuff; I recall some rumblings earlier this year that plans for a box of State of Siege and The Confession fell through and they have since lost the rights to the former, but I'd love to hear if any more is coming/one of his other titles already in the collection proper are to be released again. They certainly still have the rights to Confession as it is on Hulu, so I do hope that may see a release though in my opinion it's one of his weaker films.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
There are so many legit questions that could be asked. I would still like to hear Criterion respond to the Children of Paradise fiasco, although I doubt that will ever happen. And, still waiting on the pre-code (maybe licensed Warner) film Kim mentioned two years ago. So I would like her to follow up on that.

They posted a picture of an interview with Bill Hader and Four More Screenplays by Preston Sturges. The screenplays in that book are The Palm Beach Story, The Great Moment, The Miracle at Morgan's Creek, and Unfaithfully Yours. UY upgrade? Miracle? Box set? (I can dream can't I)

Miracle of Morgan's Creek is with Warner Brothers (now in the Archive). Any from the Universal box set would certainly be welcome.

An Unfaithfully Yours upgrade to complement Arrow's hopefully upcoming 6 film Sturges box set would be best (to prevent crossover, I mean).

What if the reason Criterion didn't throw Harold Diddlebock in with the Freshman is that they're working on a complete Sturges box? All they'd need to do is finagle Morgan Creek from Warners (they worked with Shout, it could happen) and Beautiful Blonde from Fox (I don't think the French, They Are a Funny Race is with anyone in the states). I mean, if we're dreaming, let's dream big!

That would be amazing and I'm not even a fan of Sturges. Who owns the rights to that Howard Hughes film he did?

The lack of Harold Diddlebock on The Freshman didn't come as a surprise to me because I figured it made more sense to be alongside Mad Wednesday in the upcoming Lloyd talkie set. That said I'd much rather see it in a Sturges set!domino harvey wrote:What if the reason Criterion didn't throw Harold Diddlebock in with the Freshman is that they're working on a complete Sturges box?

Probably just an upgrade of Unfaithfully Yours with some new special features. Just google Preston Sturges and Bill Hader and you'll turn up quite a few results of Hader hosting repertory screenings of Unfaithfully Yours. Must be a favorite of his.

Criterion posted on instagram a couple of pictures along the text: "Dogs on shirtless men has been a theme in our QC department this week. From L'AVVENTURA and LA CIENAGA". The pictures are one of each film...so...maybe...is an indication that Ms. Lucrecia Martel is joining the Collection?...hope so....

I'd say that's confirmation, unless Criterion are doing QC on some other company's discs on some kind of weird pro bono basis.Sr. Hache wrote:Criterion posted on instagram a couple of pictures along the text: "Dogs on shirtless men has been a theme in our QC department this week. La Cienega was an HVE release back in the day, so I'm sure it was easy for Criterion to get the rights.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Criterion has released maybe 100 HVE titles themselves (including all the Zatoichi), most of which look to have been licensed by HVE around 2002 - 2004. Anyone know if all the titles reverted to Criterion or if Criterion is simply licensing individual titles as they expire? I'd love to see Mr. Klein, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, La Ceremonie, Bitter Rice on blu-ray and I remember liking most of HVE's Suzuki & Fukasku better than many of the titles Criterion released. Upgrades to Juliet of The Spirits, The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeosie, Red Beard & The Cranes Are Flying, not to mention the Eisensteins, would be nice too.
