WB has despised The Devils since it was first released, due to its controversial content, and virtually wants nothing to do with the film (they have been suppressing a DVD release of the film for years and only recently licensed it out to the BFI, though denied them releasing it on Blu-Ray and using the 2004 reconstruction). I'm sure Criterion would love to release it, as they even stated they were going after it last Wexner chat; it's just a matter of whether or not Warner will budge.

Those are all good choices, vidussoni. Straight Time would be particularly cool if they could get some other filmmakers to talk it about it in a feature, like Micheal Mann (who worked on a draft), Quentin Tarantino (who knew and worked with Bunker and was influenced by the film) and Thom Anderson (who would have interesting things to say about the film's sense of place in Los Angeles).

Insightful! Impossible to tell from your last few dozen posts what you value in cinema or storytelling, but let's say this one isn't your cup of tea. Maybe you have a problem with the religious themes or the way the VFX look? Who knows. I do wonder whether you'd actually be willing or able to argue that it isn't a film with ridiculous balls? For me, it's on a short list with other narratives like Bigger Than Life or Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia that have the undiluted courage of their convictions, that follow their own ideas so much further than you think they will go -- all the way to the end if not beyond.

I'm really hoping The Loved One is being discussed, as it got unceremoniously dumped on Warner Archive MOD disc last year (and I consider it one of the best comedies of the '60s).

Um, The Player's been on Blu-ray for a while in a couple of editions.

I'm pretty confident that most anything that Warner has already released on Blu-ray in relatively quality editions (The Player, Magnolia, etc.) will NOT be going to Criterion. With as large as the Warner catalog holdings are this should be the case - get the stuff that needs a new release out as a priority over any re-issues. The New World will likely be the only exception to this, as the Blu-ray had one cut of the film, and also factoring in that Malick is so closely involved with Criterion.

WB has the theatrical rights, Sony (Pink Floyd's American label) has the home video rights. Live at Pompeii has a better chance of a Criterion release, it's with Universal and there has been restoration work on it lately. The chances of a company like Criterion getting either of them are slim though, the band's American company would likely want to release it themselves.

I dunno, I wouldn't rule out early WB blurays like Adventures of Robin Hood, Criterion loves getting back old LD titles.

Adventures of Robin Hood is a pretty stacked BD and it looks fantastic after the 3-Strip Technicolor remastering. I wouldn't want Criterion to waste their time.

Similarly, I really hope Freaks is not the pre-code being teased by Criterion. I love the film and all, but the Warner DVD already has some very nice supplements, and it would be great for a more obscure and unavailable gem (like Temple Drake) to receive the kind of popularity boost that Criterion can give it.

The Palm Beach Story is definitely a good sign that the rest of the Sturges Universal owned films will get released/upgraded down the line.
