I would add Napoleon (Abel Gance) to the list. It certainly seems to be on Criterion's radar, especially the way Kim Hendrickson spoke about it at the 2013 Wexner talks.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Becker and Turrell name-checked a number of foreign Sony titles in their Q+A in Italy. All of which have been released except La Verite (Clouzot)
When they were answering responses on Facebook they indicated that Milos Forman's Taking Off was coming at some point. Universal toured a restoration about 2 years ago which Forman did a few Q+A's and confirmed that Criterion had plans to release it. Nothing yet...
They indicated they had the rights to a number of Costa-Gavras titles like The Confession and State of Siege but I think a member here posted that the rights expired and the copyright owners decided not to re-license the titles to Criterion (since they put nuthin' out).

Don't forget Oshma's "Boy", which was hinted in the New Year's drawing and is available on Hulu.
At this year's Wexner talk they also indicated there was more Terrence Malick coming.

I was under the impression that at Kim confirmed Jan Troell's The New Land and The Emigrants at 2013 Wexner talk. Same time, she also mentioned that Le Samourai upgrade was coming soon.

Wouldn't it be safe to add 'more WCF sets'? They mentioned 'Limite' at a previous Wexner chat (2013) when discussing the restorations, and along with A Brighter Summer Day, has yet to be released.
BTW, I remember a previous updated version of this forthcoming list mentioning 'Lili Marleen', the Fassbinder film. How did that become a rumor? Does Janus have it?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
If you do an archive search you'll see that about half of the rumored titles have since been released. Some of them were eventually put out by Olive and Cohen.
There are still a bunch that have yet to surface: Bitter Rice, Rocco and His Brothers, Deep End, The Soft Skin, Shanghai Express...

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The old Forthcoming thread had many more categories than the current one does, even if the information was years old (Andrei Rublev, for example). I'm not sure why it got pared down so drastically, but is it archived or reachable in some way? I remember that it had a substantial list of directors even if they didn't all have titles attached.

I'm curious when The Silence was indicated as forthcoming, and whether or not the rest of the Trilogy box set was also confirmed.

The 4K restoration of Hiroshima, Mon Amour is doing the art house circuit courtesy of Rialto, so that should be coming too.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Phew. I've updated my original post quite drastically. I've added everything that you guys have said thus far, changed the color scheme a bit, added an "upgrade" section (since there isn't anything worse than hearing the same titles being asked for again and again, plus this way people will avoid the pain of double dipping on a forthcoming title).
I also added quite a bit from the original forthcoming thread from 2012 (linked to above from Internet Archive). I used my best discretion - getting rid of announced titles (from Criterion/elsewhere - back when Criterion was considering picking up the Republic titles that eventually went to Olive). I also avoided the too vague to count films (Criterion going: "yes, we'd like to maybe consider one day having more Sirk if possible"). Whatever was left, I put in the bottom "distinct possibility" section - since who knows at this point, most of those guesses are over five years old now (although nothing from another company has resulted as of yet).
Thanks for your help everyone! If anyone has anything else, feel free to chime in. Is everyone happy with the categories? Hopefully Cinephrenic can edit this in on his post once finalized!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I emailed Mulvaney several years ago when the restoration of World on a Wire was touring asking him if there were plans to release that film and other Fassbinders. At the time, he said there were no plans for World, but he believed Lili Marleen was in the works.SpiderBaby wrote:Wouldn't it be safe to add 'more WCF sets'? Perhaps Lili is still forthcoming but I would guess it's been put on hold now that Criterion is upgrading the Wellspring titles.

Well, um, I assumed it would be up to date, since it's Criterion's own list!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Watership Down is iTunes, not Hulu+.
(I stand corrected. Watership Down seems to also be on Hulu+, but not listed on Criterion's list of Hulu+ films. That's at least one omission from their "official" list.)

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
So, should we expect a 30 disc Wim-toichi set? I'd imagine we'll get the Road Trilogy soon enough, but at the very least Buena Vista Social Club must be high on Criterion's list. It sounds like quite a lot should be forthcoming, and that the 4k restorations should preclude any "dumped on Eclipse" sets.Wenders wrote:You're going to see a lot of it [come out]," Wenders told The Playlist. "Except for [the detective noir] ‘Hammett,’ I produced all my films myself, so I own them all."

They were asked about those Troell films, and the answer was "I loved those films, and would love to work on them, and we've tried, but haven't had any luck."chatterjees wrote:I was under the impression that at Kim confirmed Jan Troell's The New Land and The Emigrants at 2013 Wexner talk.
