Ah, I knew I should have held off on buying An Autumn Afternoon during the recent flash sale. I figured it wouldn't get a blu-ray upgrade for a very long time. I've held off on it for quite some time, but grew impatient... That's frustrating. I'm glad they're doing an upgrade.

As far as I know these two major Godard films have no Region 1 DVD (or Blu ray) release:

Every Man for Himself (aka Slow Motion) (1980)
Nouvelle Vague (1990)

There are probably more, maybe even some from the 60s. Is there a good chance that Criterion releases these in the future? I think Godard's 2nd phase (1980-2000?) is really fascinating, even though he seemed to have lost almost all interest in making "cinema". Cohen Media's recent releases of Hail Mary and For Ever Mozart on Blu-ray reminded me how much I enjoy the late Godard. I also am interested his work with video. There are many many short films he made in a style similar to Histoires du Cinema. Maybe a nice box set? 8-[

Mike Nichols's page is likely for Carnal Knowledge. Also. I'm pretty sure that Warner will release Virginia Wolf themselves.

I just noticed that Carnal Knowledge is actually available to rent on Amazon Instant, albeit from Lionsgate. Did MGM lose the rights for this one, and if so, I wonder if Nichols' phantom page isn't for this film after all (isn't Lionsgate tough to license from?).

Carnal Knowledge was originally produced by Avco Embassy Pictures*, most of whom's library is currently owned by Studio Canal (hence Lionsgate). MGM controls most domestic physical media rights for the library--although exceptions abound, usually because of separate deals Canal worked out, or items they've lost control of due to rights reverting, co-productions etc.

*Other Titles of Note: The Graduate, This Is Spinal Tap, The Lion In Winter, Darling, The Producers, The Howling, Escape From New York, Zulu.

More than likely its simply to acknowledge his passing, but Warner did have it reportedly in the works a couple years back and it never got the Blu-ray release was expected, so maybe that's because it got handed off to Criterion.

At this year's Wexner talk they also indicated there was more Terrence Malick coming.

Almost certainly The New World.

Call me crazy, but I actually doubt that it is The New World. Considering it was heavily rumored that Malick was working on a director's cut of The Tree of Life, I would put my money on the Palme d'Or winner being the upcoming title.

Also take into factor that the rights to The New World are owned by New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers. I am still skeptical about the number of Warner titles Criterion is working with at the moment.

On the other hand, the rights to The Tree of Life is owned by Fox, a distributer who has already worked with Criterion on more than a couple of titles. Taking into factor the prestige of The Tree of Life and the distributer, I'd say Criterion nabbed it. Or, this could all just be wishful thinking.

While that's always been the case, I believe the comment in question was an off-handed remark at the last Wexner talk about how great it is that some directors get really involved with Criterion. Malick was just an example I believe.

The New World would be a particularly good candidate for the Criterion treatment in light of the three different cuts of the film (the early/qualifying run cut, the general theatrical release cut, and the director's cut).

Of course if the mythical alternate cut of Tree of Life (apparently with a ton more material from the 1950s-era) could surface as well that would be grand.

Mystery Eclipse (Czech New Wave Part Two?, Heinosuke Gosho?, Hideo Gosha?, Kaurismaki Part Three?, Bulldog Drummond?)

I come here every single month crossing my fingers for some Hideo Gosha news, but nothing. Not sure if I have to start a petition, but nothing would make me happier than a Hunter in the Dark blu-ray/DVD. An interview with Tatsuya Nakadai would be magic for this film. Not sure why Criterion has been holding off on a physical release of this film. They even have it up a digital HD on Amazon.

Many of these have been in the "saved" section of my queue for years. Obviously some are OOP, many have never yet appeared on disc, others are easily available but Netflix can't be bothered. I have another 142 titles in the "saved" section of my queue which at this point might just as well be called the "we're going to ignore our customers for half-a-decade or more" section. Titles like By Brakhage V. 2, 45365, Birdsong, Middletown, dozens of 70's exploitation and horror films, maybe 15 Fassbinder flicks, dozens of Criterions they never bothered to get.

I don't believe Beyond the Hills is on Hulu. There is the possibility that it was put up and taken down (for whatever reason, this seems to happen a lot of Hulu). When you saw it, did it appear under the Criterion Collection moniker?

Does anyone know who to contact about upcoming releases and if there is anything we can do to help push a release along?

I think I've driven Jon insane over the years asking about Hideo Gosha's films especially Hunter in the Dark. I'm a HUGE fan of the film and would be willing to contribute in whatever way possible to help get this film released.
