Looks like they're saving money on two fronts now, booklets and design. Oh, okay, the Eroll Morris covers are all right. Cries and Whispers is pretty shocking.

Both Cries and Whispers and The Soft Skin look like they were done by someone who skipped the last semester of Photoshop classes. Like, really, really, unbelievably bad work for someone who got paid to do it.

The Soft Skin is going for something different and I think I like it, and the Thin Blue Line works. Otherwise, as ever, fuck this month's covers

Cries and Whispers: Frightening, but completely in spirit with the film, intended to make you feel uneasy. As it seems this cover does for most of you. Not great, but miles ahead of that awful "To be or not to be" cover.

Why did they get rid of the old Hoop Dreams cover? Talk about a downgrade.

Regarding Hoop Dreams, why change a perfectly normal good cover?

This is their way of saying "Maybe now you guys will buy our Dual Format releases, eh?"mallo543 wrote:Looks like they're saving money on two fronts now, booklets and design.

I do wonder if they might be holding back boxsets too?

Actually I really like the Soft Skin cover. I haven't seen the film, but the image really grabs me. I like the Morris covers... mostly the one for Thin Blue Line, which seems to fit with Morris' approach in the film of "oh I'm just scratching to see what's under here, and, oh! look at that! It's something interesting! And a criterion logo."

And Ride the Pink Horse is good for maintaining their artistic vision of cartoon-y covers for classic Hollywood releases, but making it better.

Gates / Vernon looks like a really hip box of crackers.

Oh man, the cover of Cries and Whispers makes me think it stars Brad Pitt.

Love how Ride the Pink Horse pretty much looks like a lost WPA mural.

I imagine they wanted the new DVD release to stand out from the previous OOP one.Cinephrenic wrote:Regarding Hoop Dreams, why change a perfectly normal good cover?

I like the Hoop Dreams cover. It's probably some metaphor for the new transfer being a breath of fresh air compared to being distilled in a frame like the other one.

I hope that they are going to change the covers for Cries and Whispers and The Soft Skin. If they don't change The Soft Skin cover, I am probably gonna get the UK AE sets and say adios to Criterion in terms of Truffaut. Honestly, in doing so I will be saving a lot of space.

Now thats an ultimatum:chatterjees wrote:I hope that they are going to change the covers for Cries and Whispers and The Soft Skin. I'm guessing you are a part of that crowd who has to know how many stars Tim Robey gave a movie. How else to know what to watch?
Kidding aside, I don't mind any of the covers this month (and I do think that AE cover is a 100x worse than Criterion's attempt). I suppose if I hated any covers as much as some of you, I'd just print my own and slide it over the front. That said, I do kinda wish Criterion would go the Arrow approach and have alternative artwork on the flip side.

Cries and whispers might just be one of their worst covers to date.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I am not comparing the CC cover with the AE one. At the end of the day, I am also not going to think about the cover, probably. My point was different. There are eight total films in one AE box and 4 more in the other. CC has released only a fraction of it. Now, it's probably gonna take them 4-5 more years to release the rest of them, some with shitty covers like the one for The Soft Skin. If I am not going to care about the cover arts produced by CC anymore, like the other "part of that crowd", why should I wait for CC to release all the films and not get the AE sets. The AE sets will have the same transfer and also will save me a lot of space and money.Minkin wrote:Now thats an ultimatum:chatterjees wrote:I hope that they are going to change the covers for Cries and Whispers and The Soft Skin. If you really have some problem with me, why don't you say it clearly, man. From the very first day I joined this forum, you selectively attack my posts/comments. Is there any personal reason behind it?mfunk9786 wrote:Please go on
