And also people have been saying the the king with the eye is The King and I, but there are other versions of The King and I; so I think it's Anna and the King of Siam.

it cant be ONE TWO THREE. Unless things have changed, this title has been sublicensed by another label that will remain nameless.

It has to be After Hours. Look at the poster for it, the clock appears to be set at the same time as the clock in the drawing.

While the original posters of the film show a different time, the clock hands in the title (in the beginning title sequence) point to pretty much the same time as in the Criterion drawing.ordinaryperson wrote:It has to be After Hours. Another pick from my long awaited wish-list releases (but once again it is seeing what I want to see) would be 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days (a film which is mostly reffered to as 432). Tho I assume they would probably would've used a calendar instead of a clock for that one.

Pretty sure that's Drums Along the Mohawk - just wanted to say that before I read someone else already did because I never am able to come up with anything for these.FrauBlucher wrote:The group of marching soldiers to the right could be for Napoleon.

I thought it was a fire/pyre for the woman in front of it - i.e. Passion of Joan of Arc finally getting reissued. but then she has long hair, so that can't be right. :shrug:Feego wrote:To me, the big splotch on the ground by the woman looks more like a sink hole or something rather than blood.

Someone elsewhere suggested the abridged bridge is actually a hint for Monte Hellman's 2010 Road to Nowhere. Given Hellman's popularity in the Collection, it seemed as reasonable a guess as any.

While I haven't seen Drums Along the Mohawk, I don't think the kepi hat on the front soldier would fit the American Revolutionary War (I think this type of hat was used afterwards, but I might be wrong). The Duellists also wouldn't really fit the number of people in the drawing.HistoryProf wrote:Pretty sure that's Drums Along the Mohawk - just wanted to say that before I read someone else already did because I never am able to come up with anything for these.FrauBlucher wrote:The group of marching soldiers to the right could be for Napoleon.
Could be Napoleon since I thought there was already an understanding of Criterion's intention of releasing this. And another pick that would make an amazing surprise for me, in the memory of Miklos Jancso, would be The Round-Up.

None of my jokes are working today. All must still be hungover. and yes, I knew the clue was for The New World, but its placement near the edge of the frame, made me think it could also infer The Ship Sails on, as that is an upgrade that will be coming eventually at some point.
So, all we have left to figure out is the knife fight (most likely Napoleon), the gun lady (Gun Crazy came to mind) and whatever the spot/ blood/ snow/ lava/ exploding tree nearby.

Over on the bluray.com forums there were a few people who thought the rose might be from Beauty and the Beast. (Disney film) While that's not happening; IFC is releasing Walerian Borowczyk's The Beast in theaters and VOD this month. I haven't seen that film; so not sure if there's anything there.

2015's drawing is in a picture frame and is of a landscape. Makes me think the they are referencing Mike Leigh's "Turner"Jeff wrote:2010 took place in a Red Desert.SCOTTiE wrote:The frame of the New Years newsletter itself is not typically a clue. 2011 took place on L'Atalante.
2012 took place at a Lonesome Coney Island beach that was Breaking the Waves.
2013 took place in the hellacious burning hotel from Barton Fink. (long delayed)
2014 took place at a Hanging Rock above a Red River and a Bay of Angels.

Max and his wild rumpus buddies on the left of the bridge is for Where the Wild Things Are, I think.
The four mutes with knives have me stumped. Though the soldier leading the musket men also has a knife like the mutes.
The blood splatter reminds me of some poster art but I can't place it...

A rose does play a prominent role in The Beast...which we've heard Criterion is releasing anyway. Though after all that Arrow did to present a fuller picture of Borowczyk's oeuvre, it would be a shame if Criterion just focused again on his more scandalous works.ianungstad wrote:Over on the bluray.com forums there were a few people who thought the rose might be from Beauty and the Beast. Really weird aside, but I stumbled across a small pool of blood this morning (somebody had a bad new years outside my favorite coffee shop) and it was pretty jaggeddwk wrote:A blood spatter, unlike a pool of blood, wouldn't necessarily be fluid and rounded. What's rising off of it seems to be smoke or dust. Doesn't look like snow to me because it's open-ended at the top.ordinaryperson wrote:that is obviously snow next to the blood.

I was talking about a stain or spatter of blood, not a pool. When said "fluid and rounded," I meant a more droplet-like irregular edge. I believe blood would've been drawn mostly if not all black. I think it looks more like fire or a crater than liquid, except maybe a thick liquid -- maybe it's lava! The way the jagged points are drawn is more fire-like. I wouldn't rule out liquids, but I'm confident it's not blood, especially blood against snow, in which case it would've been made dark to accentuate the difference.dwk wrote:A blood spatter, unlike a pool of blood, wouldn't necessarily be fluid and rounded. Man, do I hope that clock turns out to be After Hours...
When was it confirmed that Criterion is releasing The Beast? I know IFC picked up the rights to both that and Immoral Tales, but I don't believe there was any confirmation or hints that Criterion would definitely be putting these out.swo17 wrote:A rose does play a prominent role in The Beast...which we've heard Criterion is releasing anyway.

It's an opening in the ground, edged by a couple of cracks. Let's start thinking of what that might indicate.

I do like the Duellists for the guys along the river. at first glance I thought the guy in back had a drum, hence my earlier guess of Drums Along the Mohawk. Duellists is LONG overdue for a remaster and proper contextual extras.
