This was the answer I got (more or less) from Mulvaney when I originally inquired.

The fact is that even from viewing the SD/DVDs, these prints are not badly damaged and any competent company could pull a great 1080p scan from a 35mm negative.

They ran 35mm prints the spring before the DVD, it is was OK for bluray, quality wise.

EddieLarkin wrote:They did say that about Rossellini's War Trilogy...which is coming to Blu-ray next month via new 4K restorations.
But in this case, these are NEW restorations that weren't available at the time. It could be the same for Human Condition but otherwise, their first statement could unfortunately still hold.
I'm not aware of Human Condition having been recently restored, but one can still hope...

Criterion just posted an Instagram list of World Cinema Foundation titles, including A Brighter Summer Day, an Ousmane Sembene short, Mysterious Object at Noon, The Color of Pomegranates, and many others.

Color of Pomegranates is the only one not on the WCF site. Big surprise for me, if Criterion ever does standalone releases of these films this would have to be one of them

Also noticed that Forest of the Hanged and Two Girls on the Street are no longer on their website

None of this information is actually news, except for the fact that Criterion still remembers that the WCF exists.

Outside of A Brighter Summer Day, Kalpana is the one I'm most excited about.

Haha

It's interesting to see how Brighter Summer Day slowly but gradually becomes the most wanted film for cineasts. I figure some have seen him, but it still does elude me (for the record, I like Yi Yi, but don't love it).

Color of the Pomegranate... Wasn't a BD for this announced?

Edgar Wright visited the Criterion offices. I'm going to assume this was no more than a visit while he was in town, or just coming out of an interview for a future supplement, but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing the Three Cornetto Flavours Trilogy (or Scott Pilgrim) in the Collection.

The Brood is one of his favorite films. If he wasn't just visiting the office; he was probably filming an appreciation to be included in the supplements. (Much like Bill Hader recently with Palm Beach Story)

With the Mario Monicelli retrospective going around, it would be nice to see a few titles added to The Organizer and Big Deal On Madonna Street. The Great War or For Love And Gold, would be nice, but it looks like only The Passionate Thief has a (4K) digital restoration, all the others look to be older prints.

I'm guessing BLOW-UP is not too far off... Is streaming in HD on Amazon.com Instant Video, and it looks like the clips are in HD in this BLOW-UP & Photography exhibition currently @ C/O Berlin

Too early in the year to predict Inside Llewyn Davis and Barton Fink for Monday's titles announcement?

I'm indifferent to Midnight Cowboy, but even so, that would be an amazing slate.

Valley of the Bees
Emigrants/The New Land
The Long Voyage Home
Midnight Cowboy
Roots of the Czech New Wave dual format eclipse
Summertime Blu-ray
Red Beard Blu-ray

I want to predict the Apu trilogy based on the recent article about criterion's epic restoration of all three films, but I figure November at the earliest, and Pather Panchali, at least will probably get a theatrical issue.

David, judge for yourself in those clips @ C/O Berlin, looks to be something of an improvement, but your guess is as good as mine... Like yourself I can't access the Amazon US HD feed either...

This exhibition, which debuted @ Albertina in Vienna, comprehensively catalogues the photographic images and paintings within the film BLOW UP, also the publicity and production stills & a host of other related photographic material... All usefully compiled in the substantial exhibition catalogue published by Hatje Cantz (available in both German & English editions)... Fascinating exercise!...
