Spoiler
Ron Howard, who has apparently cast his dad and brother at least 18 times each. I wasn't aware he had even made that many films!

I got 31. I don't think I've ever actually seen a film by
Spoiler
Tony Scott
, so I don't feel bad about missing that one.

Swo, I had a similar thought process. I had no idea who those people were, but figured that since they had appeared in so many films, it must have been some director who bridged the studio and modern eras.

29 out of 32 here. I'm kicking myself on the ones I missed:
Spoiler
Christopher Guest (I just saw Eugene Levy's name and it somehow prevented me from thinking of anything but the American Pie movies, the director of which I couldn't remember anyway!), Howard Hawks (I really need to brush up on my classic directors!) and Francis Ford Coppola (that was the one I'm really kicking myself about as the Nicolas Cage thing should have helped, but didn't!)

It's interesting which stars "gave away" the director
Spoiler
Like, I should have gotten Coppola because of Robert Duvall, but honestly it was Diane Lane, mainly because I could think of no other director worth remembering who cast her more than once. Others I remember getting from only looking at one of the stars: Benigni for Jarmusch, Woods for Stone, Kristopherson for Sayles, Grace Kelly for Hitchcock. The only one that made me think for even two seconds was Tony Scott, because I guessed Michael Mann first but Scott was the natural second guess. Also I lost about thirty seconds because unlike the other quizzes, I couldn't just enter answers whenever regardless of order, and it took me a little bit before realizing that (I kept thinking, "Wait, is that not Soderbergh?")

The only one that gave me any trouble at all was Capra. I didn't know he had worked with Stanwyck so much, so I was just running through all the directors I could think of who had worked with Jimmy Stewart and weren't already on the list: Mann, Cukor, Koster...
Spoiler
If you're interested, TCM put out a boxed set of early Capra films that's 4/5 Stanwyck flicks (the other collab not included being Meet John Doe)

Got all of those with half the time left to run. Considering I'm no big fan of Hollywood (and there was precious little else on the list, depressingly), this suggests it was way too easy. There were several answers I could guess just from the first name on the list (and accurately predicting the bias of the whole quiz - like, the likelihood of the answer to any list with Isaac de Bankole on it being Claire Denis was zilch).

This guy used to post some of the largest quizzes on Sporcle before he started his own site.
Thank you for this! It let me find my favorite Oscar quiz which used to be on Sporcle & mysteriously disappeared.

27 / 32.
Spoiler
Not too bothered about the ones I missed. Probably should have guessed Sant and Guest, but I never had a chance for Mamet, Stone or Lee. Turturro being in 9 Spike Lee joints was the most surprising: I had no idea.

Directors by Films: 72/100... really disappointed in this score, but my synapses just could not pull down some of these names

Criterion 1st 100: 55/100... about what I expected

Golden Bear: 20/100... So strange that I did relatively well on this one, of all quizzes

Sayles was a pretty obscure one to throw in there, at least it seemed to me. I missed him, Lee, Scott, Stone and Leigh.
