BD 112 Fellini Satyricon

Fellini Satyricon

Image

As famously described by its director, Fellini Satyricon is a science-fiction film, but one that looks backward into the past rather than forward into the future. One of Federico Fellini's most famous films, and a landmark of counter-culture cinema, Fellini Satyricon marked a radical new direction for the creator of La strada and La dolce vita.

Based loosely on Petronius's classical (and fragmentary) text, Fellini Satyricon plunges into ancient Roman society in its most debauched period, transforming the era of Nero into a landscape perhaps no more or less alien than the worlds Fellini himself inhabited... Europe at the end of the Sixties, and the dream-tapestry that augmented his own life and aided him in producing so many unforgettable films.

With its rich palette of hues and virtuosic composition within the 'Scope frame, Fellini Satyricon merges aesthetic and sensual liberty into a boldly visionary epic. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Fellini Satyricon for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK, from a new 4K restoration.

BLU-RAY ONLY EDITION

• New 1080p presentation of the film, from a new 4K restoration
• Alternate English-language dub track
• Original theatrical trailer
• 48-PAGE BOOKLET featuring a new essay by Pasquale Iannone on Fellini and his usage of the 'Scope frame; rare archival imagery; and more

I appreciate the inclusion of the alternate English audio, which edges it out over the Criterion in my opinion, even without a commentary (at least not yet announced).

Pretty much from this point onwards in Fellini's career, the English tracks are at least as valuable as the Italian tracks, and sometimes unquestionably superior (And the Ship Sails On, a film that works far better in English because that's the language spoken by onscreen narrator Freddie Jones - the fourth-wall-breaking conspiratorial bonhomie that he exudes simply doesn't have the same effect when the voice is clearly someone else's).

Based on the Amazon and Eureka pages, all other proposed extras look to have been dropped, so it's now strictly a choice between this release's English dub and Criterion's buttload of supplements (as Swo posted in the Eureka deals thread, this is just over ten pounds at Amazon UK the moment, so if you just want the film it's a nice price).

I'd be quite disappointed if it is confirmed.

It is confirmed. The Trailer is the only on-disc extra, in addition to the English dubbed track.

According to Eureka:
Various legal reasons, that lie with another distributor meant that the 4 hours of extras we had planned couldn't be features on the disc. :(

On the bright side, that does mean the movie is on there at 35mbps :)
And it sure makes good use of it, being a gorgeous new 4K scan.

But still, 4 hours of extras (I didn't know it was going to be so much) now reduced to only a trailer... :(

What a damn shame about the extras. Just the ones on the Criterion left me wanting more to know about the film. But that's a good point from David M. I thought the Criterion looked stellar so at least this now gives full reign to the film's beauty.

I thought Fellini's gay dalliances and predilections were well accepted at this point. Case in point, Giulietta Massina's quasi-infamous outburst on the set of Juliet of the Spirits.

I have to say, watching this with the English dub was by far the most I've ever enjoyed the film, so I value that extra more highly than anything on the Criterion.
