Re: It's a Noir Vote!
I voted for Naked Kiss as I haven't watched it and definitely would pick it up Monday. Also, Shock Corridor is the only Fuller I didn't immediately love, and Kiss is supposed to be better?

It's one of my least favorite Fullers, but that's a minority opinion

Naturally, all of my local stores (work and home) appear out of stock on this, so I ordered it online, and will chime in next week.

It's Our Best Director Without Best Picture Nominations Vote
Our theme this time is films that were nominated for best director at the academy awards without being nominated for best picture. Of those films found in the collected, we're randomly selected five. Vote away!
Thanks to Domino Harvey for the theme and list of films.

Ran
The only one I haven't seen is Ran, and I have Ran, and will watch Ran, so I vote for Ran

I've seen Ran once, loved it, and would love to revisit it. One of those epic films that doesn't feel as long as it is.

Re: It's Our Best Director Without Best Picture Nominations
Reminder that while Ran is OOP from Criterion, it's widely available on Blu-ray from Studio Canal
Also, you can find a full listing here of all the films nominated for Best Director without being nominated for Best Picture here, where as you'll note a surprisingly large number are available from Criterion

I so strongly want to watch Ran I'm proposing Voter ID laws for Film Club.

Re: It's Our Best Director Without Best Picture Nominations
In all seriousness, it might not be a terrible idea to make visible the members who vote for each option, not least because it would allow for the shaming of those who vote for the winning film and then fail to add to the discussion.
Admittedly, I say this as someone who has only contributed to two or three of these, but (I think) every time when the one I've voted for has won. I'm often somewhat limited in what I'm able to get my hands on that I don't already own - especially now that the discussion window opens so quickly after voting ends - and in that spirit I voted for Red because I own the Three Colors Blu set but haven't yet re-watched any of them in HD.

There isn't an option to track voters, and I'm not sure I want to do that anyway. It wouldn't encourage participation so much as discourage voting.

Watched Ran, hated it. Got somewhat better DVD version, watched it again, hated it more.

Watch it on Blu-ray, maybe it will be the hatest

That's what I would be afraid of...domino harvey wrote:Watch it on Blu-ray, maybe it will be the hatest
Since I like more Kurosawa films that I dislike, I can live with disliking a few. It's cheaper that way, anyway.

Re: Suggestions and General Discussion
If anyone's wondering why the vote and discussion threads are being created later than usual this week, I'm on vacation and haven't been getting up early.

I was comped ...
Due to a series of complications, I was locked out of my account here for about 3 months and unable to open a new account (both required filling out a google captcha, and google is inaccessible/banned in the PRC). Turns out as a guest -- ie non-registered person -- this Criterion Film Club thread isn't viewable at all.
So not only couldn't I vote or participate in any discussion, but I wasn't even able to see/read the discussions.
I'm only a sometime participant in the CFC, probably posting in about 1/3 of the discussions.
I would have been interested in taking part in The Naked Kiss, Seconds and Kapo (which sounds like it needed more posts) discussions.
Anyway, I finally had someone on a genuine internet, not my intranet, log me in, so I'll try to catch up and see where things are at, and join in for films I'm interested in rewatching and discussing.

Re: Suggestions and General Discussion
For future reference, if it ever happens again you could just email Chris from the main page (not the forum) and I'm sure he'd be able to figure something out and contact you via email, not board PM to get it sorted. Admins can override everything on the user-end, including passwords

Re: Suggestions and General Discussion
I thought the whole reason we moved it to the Criterion subforum was so that it would be accessible to guests.
And Lemmy, feel free to try to kickstart discussion again for those films that interested you, in their respective threads.

Idiosyncratic Cascading Errors ...
I actually did email Chris off the main page, but then in one of the series of cascading misfortunes, the email address I am registered with somehow got locked (restricted access they call it, but it seems moribund).
I think what initiated the entire problem was that I changed my email address linked to my account, because my prior email was gmail, and google is dead to China. When I entered my new email account, I was required to put in a new password containing both a capital letter and a number. Next time I logged in my old password was auto-filled, so that didn't work, And then I forgot about the fancy new secure password, so again tried the old one, followed by a wrong new one (with # and Cap). For the crime of too many log-in attempts, I was restricted and had to complete the google-based captcha, but that isn't visible in China. I assumed the too many log-in attempt restriction would disappear after a week, or a month, but it seems to stay with you like a felony conviction.
Finally after 2 months I emailed Chris off the main page, but somehow the new qq email got restricted, so I have no idea if he replied or what he suggested. Odd, as I opened 4 new qq.com email accounts, and the other three work fine. I guess now I should change my email account again.
I assume my series of problems is rather, uh, unique.
Though I thought folks might want to know that the Film Club is inaccessible/unviewable to guests who are not logged in. Not sure why that is or if that was a conscious decision. But it hampered me.

I forget what the error message said, something like you don't have permission.
Someone braver than I can log out and then try to access the Film Club as a guest.
I realize I can discuss the films post-CFC discussion.
But the Film Club would have been reason to excavate those dvd's and give them a re-watch.

Re: Suggestions and General Discussion
I'm not entirely sure if you're the user I was trying to help in this instance (there were quite a few over the last little while) but there was/is a problem I'm trying to sort out with Hotmail email addresses and that was a problem with users trying to register, though this sounds like a completely different issue.
