Since this thread has been revived, if Criterion chooses to re-release Ikiru on Blu-ray (why wouldn't they?), one thing I certainly hope is if they can get the Blu-ray rights to "Rhapsody In August" from Shochiku and MGM, and move the 90-minute documentary "For Beautiful Movies" from the Ikiru set to "Rhapsody In August". The documentary features many clips from his movies, but extensively from "Rhapsody In August". Hopefully this can happen. (And also it could be discussed in the cover-art thread, they really have to do new cover art work. It looks like it was made on graph paper, and the swing, how tall is that swing supposed to be, with those unrealistic bars?)

Is this a new restoration from Criterion or has it been out in Japan/elsewhere already? I figured this one would take some time given that it needed quite a bit of work despite being the biggest Kurosawa title they had left. Glad to see it's coming out, and hopefully it'll look great.

I have to assume Japan? Throne of Blood and Hidden Fortress were 2k and 4k that didn't seem to have a lot of American publicity before their Criterion announcements.

I see they're putting out a new DVD set too, what are the new features?

This leaves what, six mainline Kurosawa's that haven't been upgraded? I would imagine Red Beard is next, and if they ever release another new release Kurosawa I suppose there's really only Madadayo (unless they licensed dreams).

Looks like it is the same extras, so the new feature is the new 4k transfer.
