Perhaps some members of the staff were ordered to view Miracle On 34th Street and this suggestion to seek out venues which sell their products cheaper is the end result of that holiday exercise.

DVD Pacific is your best bet. I live in Melb. Australia. Been shopping there for 6 years without a single hassle. Their customer service is perfect. Keep up the good work!

DVDplanet.com, actually have THE best prices, if only by a fraction of a dollar or so less than DDD and empire.

it's not THAT kind.

criterion sells there discs wholesale to retailers for a price irregardless of what the retailer or etailer sells it for. they aren't really telling us to go elsewhere to buy cheaper, they are just telling us to still buy. they dont make any more money on a title from dvdplanet than they do amazon, so yeah, there is my cynical view of it.

Am I correct in recalling that DVD Planet is owned by the same entity that owns Image? (I seem to have heard this "once upon a time").

Yes, Image owns DVDPlanet, and I believe they also own DeepDiscount DVD.

i've been with DVD Pacific for over two years now for my Criterion needs and haven't been disappointed. please check it out, especially those living outside of the States.

The following piece is from September 23, 2003:

Image Entertainment Inc. (Nasdaq:DISK), a Chatsworth-based distributor of DVD programming, sold its unprofitable DVDPlanet Inc. division to Planet Entertainment Inc. for $2.5 million in cash.

As a result, 23 full-time and 10 part-time DVDPlanet employees have been laid off. The remaining 18 full-time and 18 part-time workers have been offered jobs with Planet Entertainment.

The sale includes DVDPlanet's Web site, all associated operations and the DVDPlanet retail store in Huntington Beach.

Planet Entertainment will also assume DVDPlanet's leases for its corporate headquarters and retail store and other items related to its purchase.

Planet Entertainment of Itasca, Ill., is a subsidiary of Chicago-based Infinity Resources Inc.

Image said it will post a $700,000 net loss from the sale. It will also expense $400,000 in severance-related compensation liability.

In Image's year-end 2003 results, it reported that its DVDPlanet division posted a loss before taxes of $1.62 million, or 10 cents per diluted share. In 2001, the unit lost $2.7 million, or 15 cents per share, before taxes.

Image Entertainment is a leading licensee and distributor of DVD programming with more than 2,500 DVD titles in domestic release.

We recognize that Criterion discs are a significant investment, and we're determined to do what we can to help our customers build their collections.

I'm astute enough to know altruism when I see it.
I can't believe it could be be the case that Criterion's discs are a significant investment for them and they want us to buy as many of the things as possible.

I've had several purchases from DVDplanet.com in the past couple of years and never had any problems with their service or shipping. I, however, am in the U.S. Maybe that is the difference between the service we've received?

I thought the message was just as shot at Amazon.

FWIW, DVDPlanet's shipping comes from DeepDiscountDVD -- they have separate websites and different prices, but their order fulfilment is identical.

Is this true? My DVDPlanet orders have always arrived far more quickly than my DeepDiscountDVD orders. Also, they're packed differently.

The conspiracy theorist in me believes that there was a power (money)struggle between Amazon.com and Image that has led to Amazon discontinue the normal discount on the Criterion DVDs and eliminating the Criterion Collection store from its website. It happened exactly on January 1st, so maybe some kind of contract between both companies ended and it hasn't been / won't be renewed until further notice. I have heard from people inside the Media retailing business that Amazon.com is becoming the Wal-Mart of the Internet and are using the 800 pound gorrilla tactics that made Wally World infamous. Most likely Image and Criterion didn't back down from the fight, hence the cryptic message on Criterion's website to shop in other places rather than Amazon.

Well, it seem that at least most of the upcoming Criterions have a pre-order discount at Amazon.com. I also noticed that it seems Amazon have hired some school dropouts, since their spelling for several of their listings are just spec-ta-cu-lar.

The Criterions are discounted once again, but Disney and its related lines are full MSRP. Perhaps, Amazon is doing some kind of rotation.

If I recall correctly they did that with the Seventh Seal, and they're planning on doing it with Black Narcissus and (apparently) the Thin Red Line.

I think HistroyProf's point is that 2-disc DVD releases at $29.95 are unusual. The DVD releases for Black Narcissus, 400 Blows and For All Mankind are all 1-disc.

Oops, my bad, I was thinking Red Shoes and Black Narcissus were both two discs now.
