Thanks. I was not aware of that.

Weinstein would have demanded the right to re-edit the film as a quid pro quo for vigorous distribution (viz Snowpiercer).

The new Mad Max movie has topped both IndieWire and the Village Voice's annual critics polls.

If the Weinstein's had gotten a hold of the Assassin, they probably would have sat on it. We would still be waiting around for the possibility of an overseas dvd/blu becoming available to even see it. It is possibly true that some other company would have treated this film better, but the Weinstein's have the absolute worst track record when it comes to distributing Asian films.
And it would have been 30 minutes shorter.

Any chance it could be in running for Best Picture instead? Just wishful thinking?

Edit: Nevermind. Read through the thread.

The failure of Hou's producers is now complete. What a disgrace.

Nobody has won anything yet -- just made it into the semi-finals. I think there will be one more winnowing -- to determine 5 or so finalists -- at least that's how it has worked in the past.

Mustang and Theeb are the only other films in that shortlist anyone is even talking about, and you can bet these three frontrunners are only even there because of the oversight committee making sure there are at least a few valid picks in the shortlist. Who knows if they'll even make the five, given this category's history

Embrace of the Serpent is a good film, with gorgeous cinematography, and I could see it appealing to Academy voters if they actually got to see i.

Was The Revenant considered a 2015 film by the National Society of Film Critics? I'm surprised not to see Revenant or Sicario on the shortlist for cinematography.

Man, I actually liked Spotlight, but given the fact that there's no runaway frontrunner, I wonder if it'll be the beneficiary of a bland consensus. It's very well-acted and it doesn't make any big missteps in presenting what is an inherently sordid story, but aesthetically it's safe as milk compared to so many other films this season - in other words it's at least agreeable to the widest range of voters while putting off none (unless you're Amy Taubin, who dismissed it as the sort of film once fit for network TV - I don't agree with that sentiment, but I understand where she's coming from).

Also, I hope Juliette Binoche gets some recognition. Kristen Stewart gave a very fine performance, but it's Binoche's lead performance (another excellent one in what's already a long distinguished career) that really makes the film resonate.

Agree that this would be an inoffensive but disappointing pick, but that wouldn't feel out of place in this particular year. After what felt to me like strong and deep years in 2014 and 2013, this past year has felt pointedly underwhelming. There admittedly are still a few major late-arriving contenders I have yet to see (most notably The Revenant, The Big Short, and Chi-raq) but even if all those ended up in my top 15 or so, it'll have been a down year.

That said, here's hoping a wide-open year awards-wise leads to some eclectic and long-shot choices.

I'm amazed they resisted the temptation to toss more recognition at MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

Yeah, I thought they'd name that Best Picture. Not with overwhelming support, but it's topped virtually all but one of the major U.S. critics polls, so it seemed to be a likely bet.
