I know, it was a tongue-in-cheek joke that I probably shouldn't have made. (For the record: There are some funny moments in both Talladega Nights and Step Brothers.)

I'm not at all defending those films, I think Anchorman is probably the only one I'd say is pretty good. Just made you come off like you had no idea that The Big Short is a legitimate film that people largely seem to enjoy on another level from those goofy comedies.

Another thing - Claude Lanzmann has never been nominated for Oscar, not for Shoah or anything else. A documentary about Claude Lanzmann (he is the subject, not the producer or director) has been nominated this year. Go figure.

It's slightly amusing that Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling (both British) are named Actor and Actress of the Year, but not British Actor and Actress of the Year. Is there a rule that makes them ineligible for both awards?

Seems that award is not recognition for a single film but for multiple films throughout the year/overall achievement. Perhaps they didn't feel like just being in 45 Years as their only big/celebrated roles was enough.

I agree with Lee on this (I think particularly in categories like Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, the choices are uninspired and also racially exclusive) but I had a roommate who typed like that and I just had an intense flashback to my hatred of said roommate. He'd quote himself in his AIM profile too, really bizarre inane and grammatically awful stuff. He'd have stuff like "You Cannot Fall In Love Without Falling Softly Into The Arms Of Love" - MPIII as his away message and I'd want to throw him out our dorm room window.

If you want a more ethnically diverse slate of nominees, then they need to be selected by a racially sensitive committee instead of by math.

Or a more racially diverse set of math. I don't think it's only the stuff of think-pieces to point out that there's an absurd imbalance that becomes more noticeable as the diversity of American society increases over time.

Perhaps I didn't quite put it the way I should have, Altair, but it would not hurt for the Academy to be a more diverse body, in age, race, and gender in equal parts. This sort of thing will never be perfect.

Er, yes? 13% of the membership is a huge chunk of membership that would likely result in several different films being included/excluded every year.
