Maybe I misunderstand your use of mainstream, but DiCaprio seems to automatically make even the most ridiculous (Great Gatsby) or noncommercial (this) project an instant favorite to the mainstream which for all of his likability Damon can't say.

I'm not saying that DiCaprio is not well liked. But he's not endearing, buddy-buddy the way Damon comes across. The role of Watney requires a certain friendship with the audience, like an internet vlogger.

Well yeah, that's why they get cast in different roles. Could you imagine Damon as Jordon Belfort or really any of DiCaprio's roles in the last decade?

I didn't come up with the hypothetical. You're framing this as though I think DiCaprio is some hack, or that I'm arguing he's inferior to Damon, or something. I'm just stating one aspect that Damon is strong in by comparison. I don't think Damon would have been right for several of DiCaprio's roles, from Hughes to Belfort.

Unfortunately this has been a common practice and not only for the Academy members, but also for the various guilds. That's why I take this whole awards thing with a grain of salt.

How about the Whoopis, Spike Lees and others have the guts to say who does not deserve a nomination as to get the African American in. It's easy to scream about Will Smith but say who he should replace. I heard a sound bite on the radio this morning from some guy who is the head of an organization, says he is not going to watch the Oscars "because there are no blacks nominated." Then he named three potential snubs. You can probably guess who he mentioned. But I thought, show some guts and say who shouldn't, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, someone else. But the guy would probably say, I don't care as long as an African American is in. Which makes this subjective process on awarding actors all the more silly when many choose awarding based on popularity, race, ethnicity or my favorite from one of the voters (Stallone is a pig), character. I'll spend Sunday night tearing open the cellophane to CC's Autumn Sonata. Happy viewing.

Easy. Take out The Martian and insert Creed. Substitute Coogler and Jordan in for Scott and Damon. I think Creed is in every way a better picture than The Martian. Even if Whoopi or Spike feel the same they can't say it aloud. Their livelihood is contingent on relationships in the industry. Even calling for other nominees to be included is bold.

Brooklyn was a really glossed-over, Hollywood-ized, romantic version of immigration — they should have screened [Elia] Kazan's America America to see what immigration was really like in the fifties. Believe me, you didn't come over in a room shared with one other person, you came over in steerage with 60 people and two bathrooms, and the reason everybody was up on top of the deck was because every smelled down below; and when you arrived you didn't live in a nice boarding house with a lovely landlady cooking delicious meals for you, you lived in tenement housing, three or four to a room. They didn't study the period and it pissed me off.

I'm not arguing that Brooklyn wasn't glossy or Hollywoodized (and since when have Oscar-nominated films not been?), but America America had nothing to do with immigration in the 1950s. This voter seems to be confusing two different eras, and immigrating to New York in the 1950s was hardly the same as the experiences of the era of immigrants coming through Ellis Island in the 1890s–1910s when a couple million people lived in tenement buildings like those documented in How the Other Half Lives. And yes, a single Irish woman likely would have lived in a boarding house or a spare room of another family. It'd be nice if the voter got the history straight before lecturing about it with handwaving about "what it was really like."

Of all the non-Oscar awards, this has to be my favorite. Mya Taylor was fantastic and and great to see her get recognized. She should've been nominated for an Oscar. Also, if this any indicator of the Oscars I'll be happy. Much rather see Spotlight win Picture/Director than The Revenant.

That was so awkward and hilarious. They're making fun of her, and she's kind of making fun of herself (I think?). The audience truly didn't know how to react when she came out or left the stage.
