Running time is currently three hours and fifteen minutes, Scorsese is waiting to hear if Paramount will let him keep it that long

I sincerely hope they let him keep this version. You don't get to see a good old long film all the time and I quite enjoy them. Naturally I can't attest to the quality but I have faith that a Scorsese project like this won't be a celluloid atrocity.

It's not like Casino, The Aviator and Wolf of Wall Street were overlong and "celluloid atrocities"., the fact that this has been a long dream project for Marty, and the lack of a DiCaprio star vehicle or homage to old masters (i.e Shutter Island) and that Scorsese is after all Scorsese I have no doubt this will be brilliant. Count me in for whatever length this ends up being

Paramount is unlikely to recoup the financial investment in this film either way, so they might as well just release the longer cut.

This will most likely garner awards interest from the Academy and whichever festival he opens it in. Which will help somewhat with audiences interest, whether theatrical or streaming. But definitely will not be box office fodder. Btw...Paramount is only the US distributor, not a producer. The foreign market will definitely allow the longer cut.

Wasn't Gangs of New York also a dream project for Scorsese? I'm optimistic but Scorsese + long runtime does not automatically mean a home run.

A Scorsese dream project that came under Harvey Weinstin's scissor hands. Weinstein in made Scorsese change a lot too, like casting Diaz instead of Polley etc. And I still think the film is pretty good. And I would say that most of his long films are good (Casino, Wolf, Personal Journey, Temptation to name a few) and this feels more like Last Temptation of Christ (brilliant) than Gangs of NY or Kundun for that matter.

wait... who was originally supposed to play Diaz's role?

in fact it is mainly Diaz that makes me think less of that movie. I already dislike her for many reasons but the fact that she has made a career out of not being able to get into character was not gonna be so good for something like gangs of new york

Well, I hope Cammy finds vindication in the afterlife, at least. Poor Cammy.

I wasn't aware that Gangs of New York was a dream project for him. Not really one of my favorites anyway. But Silence has been been a must make for Scorsese for 25 years. Just a hard sell in terms of raising money.

Funny, I vastly prefer Kundun to Wolf of Wall Street and Casino.

A Scorsese dream project that came under Harvey Weinstin's scissor hands. Weinstein in made Scorsese change a lot too
Perhaps the most well-known change made to Gangs of New York was the rejection of a fully recorded original score by Elmer Bernstein, one of the composer's last scores before his death in 2004. The rejected score was released by Varese Sarabande in 2007 (in a box set that included two other rejected Elmer Bernstein scores - all amazing) and having heard it I must say that it would've elevated the film immeasurably.

The full story of what exactly happened with Bernstein's score hasn't been documented (I don't believe Scorsese or Weinstein, nor Thelma Schoonmaker, have ever publicly commented on it), but Bernstein said in a 2003 interview:

“On Gangs of New York, Marty could never quite make up his mind about what he wanted. Then, he got into this long, painful edit. I wrote way back, nine months ago, some music for the film. I went over it with him. But as he went along, he began to have some other concept of what he wanted. He winds up with a Scorsese score, a pastiche.”

This makes it sound like it was largely Scorsese's decision, and maybe it was, but I've heard rumors in subsequent years that Weinstein wanted Bernstein's music gone early on and Scorsese fought for it but ultimately lost. To my understanding, Bernstein scored a cut of the film that was 3.5 hours long and didn't have narration. It could've simply been that Scorsese was ordered to make so many changes that dropping Bernstein's music became necessary for it all to cut together, but if it were that simple you'd think Bernstein (a master) would've been asked to come back and re-record/re-arrange his material to fit a different edit of the film. It makes more sense to me that Weinstein wanted it axed and Scorsese couldn't sway him. In any case, I hope that someday we will know the entire story of Scorsese and Bernstein's sixth and final collaboration.

...like casting Diaz instead of Polley...
Always wondered how she got into this movie. I really don't have anything against her it's just that she doesn't seem like the type of actor who Scorsese would normally cast. I've also wondered about how she got the part in Being John Malcovich. Again it in no way hinders my appreciation of the movie and it's probably her best performance but she never struck me as the Spike Jonze type either. Unless the two were having an affair as alluded to in Lost In Translation...

It's a dream collaboration of behind the scene talent for me, with Scorsese, Deakins and Glass doing top notch work, I just found it hard to get into.

Weinstein made Scorsese do all these changes because of the large budget (for recreating the district) and wanted an award hopeful, so for him it meant cutting out a lot and putting Diaz in.
Also Jonze never had an affair with Diaz, even LiT more alluded they had a close friendship than a real affair

According to Rebels On The Backlot, Diaz is good friends with Catherine Keener, who had already been cast. Keener suggested Diaz for the part after many other actresses had already read & jonze still hadn't found what he was looking for. Diaz, Keener, & Jonze did a reading together, and Jonze is quoted as saying "What Cameron is that Lotte is, is this very caring person that's very open with herself emotionally. She's not driven by her neuroses as much as she's driven by wanting to make sure everyone's happy."

I'm not a huge fan of hers, but she was brilliant in The Counselor, car scene and all.

I'm not so sure about that. Coppola (and Faris) didn't pull any punches with that characterization. I believe you when you say that there was no affair in real life but the way it played out in the movie struck me as something other than friendship, otherwise why the scathing portrayal?
