Re: Awards Season 2016
movielocke: Would it do nothing for your dismissive reduction of my interpretation of this year's race to know that I was the first person on this site to offer his/her thoughts on La La Land back in October, and that they remain essentially unchanged since that time? That was two and a half months ago, and it is either the most pathetic brag or most sincere evidence that I can provide to back up the fact that the hype surrounding this film's award chances is irrelevant to me. I simultaneously knew and didn't know about its awards appeal before I even sat down for that screening. It makes no difference in what I expressed above your post.

On the TV side, glad to see The People Vs. OJ Simpson was recognized. as was Sarah Paulson's incredible performance. But was The Crown that good?

Better than The People vs. OJ Simpson? Not quite, but it is award-worthy. I am not unhappy that it won.flyonthewall2983 wrote:But was The Crown that good?

If Deadpool is nominated for Best Picture I'm going to walk out to sea slowly, until you no longer see the top of my bald head on the horizon, never to return to land again

I'll laugh. It's a total piece of juvenelia that doesn't deserve the recognition it is getting, but it will be too much fun working through the thought process and how it functions as old people trying to understand the zeitgeist of the moment.

Re: Awards Season 2016
It won't make it; I'd say Hell or High Water is still on the edge and could not make it and that's considerably more likely to be nominated in the first place. The Producer's Guild is always 2-3 off from the actual nominees and due to the mechanics of the Oscars balloting there'll usually only be 7 or 8 nominees (and Hidden Figures is the one late-comer with momentum that I think might displace these two).

Re: Awards Season 2016
Well, and below-the-line craft categories, but even still considering Carol couldn't really break through there anywhere last year I can't see how it manages it this year.
The Best Actress race is *always* consistent of a ton of movies not in the conversation elsewhere. It's gotten better* in the past few years since the BP expansion for obvious reasons, but look back 15 years ago to when you had five years in a row where a total of six nominated actresses were in movies also nominated for Best Picture. There were even two years where the whole field of nominees weren't in any BP-nominated films. Emma Stone's win this year will probably be the first Best Actress + Best Picture winner since Million Dollar Baby.
*Better in the sense 2/5 is better than 1/5 as an average

This is an interesting detail. Having never seen you, in my head you were always bald. But, Costanza bald, not Kojak bald.mfunk9786 wrote:If Deadpool is nominated for Best Picture I'm going to walk out to sea slowly, until you no longer see the top of my bald head on the horizon, never to return to land again

Re: Awards Season 2016
Three of the movies on their list are on my top ten list, and a couple others I quite liked, but I have to admit I still enjoyed reading these tear-downs, often because I so totally disagree with the misguided critique that it actually solidifies my opinion of the film in question (The Neon Demon, Jackie, Midnight Special). In fact, the only hit job I agreed with was The Birth of a Nation; even the Deadpool pan takes it a little too far, and that was my 46th-ranked film out 63 seen so far for 2016 (how can they even attempt to argue that we don't need "masturbation via absurdly tiny hands" jokes now more than ever?).mfunk9786 wrote:"All of the movies that came out this year are Actually Bad" - Reverse Shot

Re: Awards Season 2016
Aren't the baftas supposed to be about British made cinema? The complete shutout of Robbie Ryan out of cinematography is pretty ridiculous considering how terrific his work was, that he is British and worked on two of the now nominated for Best British Film (and how work was valuable to both movies). I never understood how the baftas work but this is mostly American films with a British productions thrown into the mix

Re: Awards Season 2016
As should be apparent from the Best British Film category, it just ended up being a fairly weak year in terms of mainstream prestige output from the UK. It's not a British film but I know quite a few were expecting this to be the awards that Love and Friendship broke out at, but that's amounted to nothing.

An unproduced play, which different organizations have different ways of categorizing.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Still, how can they not nominate one of their best cinematographers, who is responsible not only for shooting a palme d'or winning film (haven't seen Daniel Blake to comment) and also shoot the exquisite and beautiful American Honey. Instead they nominate other cinematographers. I'm not complaining about Ryan not getting nominated, just found it strange how such a British-less group of nominees are presented at the baftas.Ribs wrote:As should be apparent from the Best British Film category, it just ended up being a fairly weak year in terms of mainstream prestige output from the UK.
