I'm going to choose to believe now that Mike Mills won Best Original Screenplay. Damn the conspiracy!!

Apparently Leo put the best actress envelope down on his way out and Warren picked it up.

Great, now I'm wondering if Marisa Tomei really won all over again.

They sure took their time getting word out, waiting until after the entire group got on stage and three of them gave their speeches. This is basically a repeat of that awkward Miss Universe moment last year when Steve Harvey allowed the wrong woman to take her victory walk before announcing he read the wrong name.
I found it odd that the woman who provides the voice-over said "La la land won 7 oscars tonight includin best picture" as they walked towards the stage. Aren't her lines scripted? I assumed they were, as she listed every award the film had won.

She likely has a script for every result.

They have lines ready to read for any film or winner, they don't learn til it's announced from the stage

They prepare statements to read for every possible winner in every category.

Most interested in the fact of the BF/BP split in this direction; presumably this means the people who thought Hell or High Water, Lion, Fences, or Hidden Figures put Damien Chazelle at #1 lieu of having their favorite movie represented in Best Director.

Plenty of Moonrise fans ceded Chazelle still deserved Best Director

Or they preferred the direction and acting to the overall product, as evidenced by its loss in Best Original Screenplay. Which feels spot on to me.

Price Waterhouse just lost their biggest account, however, so the Oscars have created new jobs too!

I read or heard somewhere years ago that there are actually two sets of envelopes with the winners that are placed in separate briefcases and taken to the ceremony in two separate cars, just in case something should happen to one there will always be an additional set of envelopes. Perhaps someone at Price Waterhouse goofed and put both Best Actress envelopes in the same group?

It used to be that Director and Picture went to the same movie virtually every single year. Now, what, 4 of the last 5 years have been split? That's just weird.

The good news is that we can now go a year without mfunk whining about a movie about movies winning Best Picture.

First Man has gone from, "Ugh, the kid again?" to "Let's give him the Best Pic for real this time" handicapping. Small consolation right now, I'm sure

A bunch of 40something white actors prepping their funny wigs a la The Big Short to play Price Waterhouse stooges in a film adaptation of this incident

It remains a pet concern, but no longer a substantial one

I think this is really a sort of best case scenario thanks to how it was handled. Anyone in either camp now sort of has to acknowledge the qualities of the other film and be alright.

Nah. Just don't have the same employee keeping track of the envelopes.

Also, they need to do some drills to react faster when the wrong thing is read. That should've been halted before they started acceptance speeches.
