I don't think it's "cold" so much as very droll, acerbic and surreal, which is fitting given its director, source novel by Evelyn Waugh and screenplay by the late and brilliant Terry Southern. Really fantastic film that skewers Southern California culture, and pairs beautifully with the same year's Lord Love a Duck. Great cinematography by DP/producer Haskell Wexler (whose work on America, America is seriously crying out for an HD release, too).

Another film it is in the vein of is Altman's Brewster McCloud as a sort of anti comedy farce. It's not terribly deep with a whole host of betterbyet similar films, but if you are willing to enjoy weirdness for its own sake this is a good film.

The ALL CAPITAL subtitle issue is getting a lot worse lately. Almost every Archive title I recently saw has it. Ride the High Country even randomly jumps back and forth between normal and all capital subtitles.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who concerns. Much as I love their recent selections, I don't buy them as many as before just because of that. Haven't bought Ride the High Country yet (and was definitely gonna upgrade my DVD since it's my favorite Peckinpah film), but that sounds depressing.

Glad to see it on blu (and I had almost parted w/ my dvd when it was going for big bucks....missed again). But I thought Criterion would snatch this one up & give it the IAMMMMW treatment. Has anyone seen the roadshow version or the footage cut out from the regular commercial release?

Looks like Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 5 gets Archived edition of the full set, so if you haven't picked it up yet, now is the time.

While they picked up their blu-ray releases (4-5 titles a month), Warner Archive has been slacking on any new catalogue titles in the collection and only been re-releasing old titles already on DVD for the second month now..

I got Key Largo and watched it over the weekend. It can't look any better. Another great transfer from Warner Bros. It's just a crying shame there are no supplements. Even a 20 to 30 minute video essay from a noirist or film scholar would have been welcomed.

EDIT: I bet they print a batch to have on hand to sell at San Diego Comic Con next month.
