Here's an article from IndieWire, about Sony Picture Classics' acquisition of the rights to Pedro Almodovar's next film "Volver." The current plan is to release it next summer, following a theatrical retrospective of his films (including "Law of Desire," "Women on the Verge..." and "Matador").

Almodovar has been my favorite filmmaker for more than a decade and I will make sure not to miss this very exciting retrospective.

Carmen Maura and Chus Lampreave working together again !?

Both are absolutely my favorite Almodovar actresses. I will fly to Spain to catch the world premiere next year.

Sony Classics' Almodovar retrospective will include, "Law of Desire," "Matador," "Women on the Verge," "Flower of My Secret," "Live Flesh," "All About My Mother," "Talk to Her," and "Bad Education."

I guess that explains why a certain title rumored to be released by Criterion never quite made it out.

High Heels is not included in the retrospective. It's a shame because it has some great performances by Marisa Paredes, Victoria Abril and Miguel Bose. The female prisoners breaking out in dancing (leading by Bibi Andersen) is awesome!

I take this to mean that Sony now has the rights to Matador??? Damn... I hope they release an anamorphic version on DVD before the decade is out.

So nice to see Carmen Maura back in the fold. I think I look forward to Almodóvar's films more than those of any other contemporary director (even though I found La Mala educación disappointing). I know he's capable of extraordinary things.

Volver should be opening in Spain anytime now. Annie Mall, even though you're in Portugal, do you think you will be seeing Volver very soon? I just can't wait to hear words about it.

I am actually planning on making a trip to Vigo, a city just two hours north of where I live just to see it. I hope this materializes even though I won't understand everything they say (my spanish is good but not that good).

Anyway, every reason is always a good reason when a new Almodovar film is concerned.

Sight and Sound previews Volver.

It looks really good. I miss seeing women in an Almodovar film.

It sounds brilliant. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being the greatest film of the year (though there will be some fierce competition).

For any who might be interested, Alberto Iglesias's soundtrack for "Volver" was released in Spain this week, which is a big deal for me (I'm a huge Iglesias fan). I just imported my copy, so I should have it very soon. Clips can be heard on Amazon.fr.

If you ask me Iglesias is by and far the finest composer working in film today, and just one of the greatest, period. This sounds like it may be his finest work yet.

I absolutely agree with you! I love listening to his works all the time.

Not yet, I'm afraid. That trip to Galicia came to nothing because other things got in the way and now the film's no longer showing there (Almodovar films don't have long runs in Spain, amazingly). Now, I'm waiting for it to open in my own country which shouldn't be too long, I hope.

Unfortunately only spanish hard of hearing, so we who are not understand spanish have to wait

Well, one of the links says "Castellano para sordos" which means "Spanish for hard of hearing".

Edit: Nadsat beat me to it.
