The only rationale that I could see for doing this would be if there was a large amount of printed material included. Is this the case with Lincoln? The clips in my cases for Ran and Shoot the Piano Player were broken because they couldn't properly contain the large booklets.Arn777 wrote:Especially since it still comes in a packaging the size of a Double alpha case. Late Spring--- very, very nice.
The top half is pleasant enough. Got no problem with that. Nice shade of gray.
...The bottom half makes the cover. The segmentation, the use of shape-- just looking at it makes you feel like you're watching a Ozu film in action.
Seriously. I've never seen an editing style transformed to a static image so effectively.

I just received my Young Mr. Lincoln and one of the clips holding the booklet was broken. I'd never had that problem before, even with thicker booklets. I really don't care for this type of case. It feels cheaper and the discs overlapping each other is a horrible trend that seems to be gaining steam, especially among Buena Vista releases. I hope the two disc cases don't continue to be like this.

That was the case for three consecutive cases in a row (gone thru in a store in under 10 minutes... return-exchange hell for the cashier) to finally get to an intact copy of KING OF KINGS.Jeff wrote:The clips in my cases for Ran and Shoot the Piano Player were broken because they couldn't properly contain the large booklets.Arn777 wrote:Especially since it still comes in a packaging the size of a Double alpha case. While I don't like them, I decided to switch the cases with other DVD titles that could use them. I swapped the Lincoln and Coronets cases with my In the Mood for Love and Kagemusha cases. The booklets were making it impossible to close the older style cases, but they fit beautifully in the newer cases. Now that I've done that, though, I give them permission to stop using them (unless they throw in thicker booklets again), as I find it a pain to get the discs out.gigimonagas from Kind Hearts and Coronets thread wrote:And what's up with the packaging? First Lincoln and now Hearts.

I think Alto did Korean releases of 8 1/2 and possibly a few other titles with some of the Criterion supplements (such as commentaries) carried over. There was some controversy over the legality of it because Alto claimed they had licensed the supplements from Criterion while Mulvaney said they hadn't. I might be blurring some of the details together, though.

Don't overreact. Equinox is hardly news, it's been on the radar for years. Much like Tales of Hoffman was, it's just nice to see it come out.
Anyways, they are both lovely covers. It's always cool to see criterion release the odd cult film now and then. Fiend Without a Face and The Blob are both guilty pleasures, and they come much too far and inbetween!

Eh?
C'mon, man. They've done crappy low-budget sci-fi flicks before, and they've been playing wit this one for ages. If anything, their new direction has something to do with low-key American indie comedies.
Anyway, let's see what comes of this. Spine number 336 is a Cover Art Coming Soon. I'm hoping for Spirit of the Beehive or This Sporting Life.

That Equinox cover is the best cover ever, or at least the best cover since the last cover I declared "best cover ever."
