Wait, someone else take responsibility for something around here outside the 3-5 of you who do all the work? Surely you jest, sir.

I actually noticed because I usually check it every time it updates but I assumed there was some announcement I'd missed. I still use this regularly but once a month works just as well.

Everyone sets their own rules for year assignments. Put them wherever they make the most sense to you.

I can't even arrive at a set of rules that makes sense to just me, other than the hopelessly subjective and idiosyncratic "films that I was only able to see (i.e. afforded the opportunity, in terms of their distribution and my geolocation) for the first time this year, and which are not restorations/rereleases." But "able to see" could mean it came out in the U.S. or I caught a screening abroad, or (occasionally) saw through some other means like a passworded online screener.

It seems like a given cinematic year is really about a 13-14 month window for the late December/January rollouts, or as much as 18+ months if you count the gap between festival debuts & foreign theatrical and stateside release. Nocturama made my top 10 list last year, having seen it August 2016, and it's not out in the U.S. until this August.

First post updated. Films just now appearing for the first time in older years:

Nerve
The Son of Joseph
Listen Up Philip
The Color Wheel
Detention

Also, the 3-way tie for 2011 film with the most #1 placements has finally been broken.

Just a quick note: Some people have been including Twin Peaks: The Return in their top 10s, while others have given it (or Episode 8) an honorable mention. In the spirit of being a mere observer and not imposing rules on anyone's lists, I will count any mention of this in a top 10, but not any mentions outside of a top 10. I will also count individual episodes separately from The Return as a whole.

First post updated. Lots of changes:

- Several films new to 2017, including The Last Jedi and The Shape of Water in the top 25 (and Phantom Thread just barely missing the cut)
- Get Out back as the consensus #1 of 2017 (barely)
- Paterson now tied for consensus #1 of 2016
- Graduation and Nocturama switched years
- Voyage of Time and The Arbor new to 2016 and 2010, respectively

First post updated. Lots of films new to 2017, Cameraperson new to 2016. Also, just for fun, if I treat each post in the Dynamic thread like an Oscar ballot, the Best Picture race would look like this:

1. Get Out
2. Phantom Thread
3. Dunkirk
4. Lady Bird
5. The Shape of Water
6. Call Me by Your Name
7. The Post
8. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
9. Darkest Hour

Swo, just out of curiosity, does that include only posts with a full top ten?

No, but if I do it only counting full lists that have been updated since at least November, Phantom Thread edges out Get Out (and everything else stays about the same).

That also reminds me to post this about my next update on March 5th:

The next update after the Oscars will be the year-end one, at which time I will be doing the following:

1. No longer counting 2017 lists of less than 10, and only partially counting lists of 10 that haven't been updated recently. If you haven't edited your list since at least the last Friday of October and you want it to count as is, then you will need to add a note to your post that indicates this. Lists that I stop counting at year-end can be counted again later if they're subsequently edited to constitute a qualifying top 10.

2. Deleting empty place-holder posts in the 2017 thread that were never updated. These people are free to contribute a list at some point in the future, but they will lose their spot earlier on in the thread.

3. "Freezing" the results for years 2017 and prior (i.e. any changes during 2018 will be shown as changes from that point in time).

Thanks! I thought that might be the case given how early of a release Get Out was last year and how much later Phantom Thread went wide than the others on the list.

I'm sure this would be exhausting (and boring) to institute, but wouldn't it be great if the films with their own threads were linked to in the first post?

You're right--that would be exhausting! We'll see if I'm ever that bored.

EDIT: So, 2018 for instance would look like this. Would it bother anyone's OCD that certain films (such as Black Panther) are likely to never have their own thread?

The Top Films of 2018

Most #1 Votes: Annihilation (7)

01 Black Panther (8)
02 Annihilation (7)
03 Game Night (5)
04 Zama (3)
05 The Death of Stalin
06 The Cloverfield Paradox

+/- is change during month ending on Last Edited Date

Well as we've seen with the Nurse Betty thread, some films take their time before prompting intense discussion...

I'm already doing this with links to my own posts on the films I've seen in my list for my own use, so in a case like Black Panther you could always link to the post within the larger thread that kicks off the main line of discussion like this. It's imperfect, obviously, and it wouldn't cover those films that have no substantive discussion to link to, but it serves more or less the same purpose of directing people to the discussion on a film.

phantom threads no more

The first post now has links to discussion threads where applicable. Thanks to DarkImbecile for doing most of the legwork for that.
