About time. The impact this film had on a number of genre filmmakers (Raimi, Coscarelli, Jackson, etc.) is monumental, and with all it's faults it remains a Rosetta Stone in horror film history. As usual, by looking at the outpooring of uninformed and useless opinions, I can see I haven't missed much by keeping off this forum for some months now. At least Criterion has the sense to go with their own instincts.

1000 Misspent Hours is one great website!
Equinox, huh? Does this mean we'll be getting Criterion editions of Begotten or American Psycho? How about the complete works of Richard Kern? And to think I've been bothering them about adding Lost Highway to the collection.

I think, at the very least, all fans of Ray Harryhausen will enjoy this film.

Eclipse? Where? What's that?

Is not happening. At least, not in this lifetime.

You haters are going to be shocked by how much time and affection has been showered on this release. Expect something comparable with the CC edition of CARNIVAL OF SOULS, in terms of presentation and extras.

BTW, this is actually a wildly entertaining little film, especially given its origins and budget. It was also a very influential film within the community of visual f/x artists. I'm a little surprised to see it out under the Criterion banner instead of as an Eclipse title, but there are many worse titles in the Collection than this one.

Told ya so!

BTW - I once discussed this movie with Harryhausen. His take was that given the conditions under which the film was made, it would have been almost impossible to any better, especially with regard to the stop-motion animation. He was also very impressed by some of the character designs in this movie, as I recall, particularly the demon at the end.

I'm still not interested in the film enough to buy this, but it seems like a heck of a release.

Maybe I'll check it out, depending on how well the never-before-seen version goes over. My dad would get a kick out of this, and Father's Day is in June.

This is probably one of Peter Becker's guilty pleasures, alongside Fiend without a Face and The Blob. Who are we to blame him? Wouldn't you do the same for you own secretly loved bad films if you had the money and/or ran Criterion? Of course! I know I would've done the same for the likes of Barbarella or Lisztomania! :D

Here's a link to the King Kong ad included on the DVD:

If the rest of the features are this much fun, then this release will be a blast. It might not be Ozu, but anyone who doesn't appreciate good old-fashioned stop motion animation has no soul.
