Take away the screenshots and I think it's fantastic!

As is? Give me a week or two to decide.

That is nearly the farthest from what I expected the cover to be, and I love it.

I too would love it more if it was just like a sketched on piece of paper, with no screenshots, and maybe the red line on lined paper being the criterion line at the top... with blue lines through the rest of it, and holes punched on the side

I don't know dude, I'd be okay with the notebook paper style cover, but it would be a little too much. Plus this gets the point across.

Yeah, wow, I love it too. I don't want to do it, but you all should complain and tell them to take those screenshots off. Though I can see why they want them there, just so regular people will better recognize what it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was packaged like Ugetsu, Man Who Fell To Earth, Short Cuts, and Slacker. So it's possible the actually dvd cover will be different and this is just box art! Head shots were a bit annoying at first glance, but the more I look at it, the less it actually bothers me.

I had the same problem with Kind Hearts and Coronets, and thought maybe the photos on the family tree would look better as illustrations since it seems jarring at first; but then you get used to it, and you realize how cool and different it is than most other dvd covers. Strong covers this month, and yes a nous amours looks similar to the covers in the Malle set, but it still looks great!

i think photos are fitting if you look at it as some kind of school scrap book

I agree with this. But heck, it doesn't look enough like a scrapbook. I mean, perfect circles?

...If they changed the edges of the photos to be "torn," I'd go for it a lot more. Heck, I'd be fine with the photos simply being rectangular.

As it is, I think it's interesting and pretty clever, but more or less ugly-looking.

Naah, too obvious. I love it as it is. Best Criterion cover of the year!

It took me a moment to get used to (not having anything to do w the design itself.. more of Criterion creating a "busy" cover like that), but I actually kinda like it & think it works very well... though I'll be passing on the disc(s)(!).

The D&C cover is alright. But frankly I would have loved to ee another Linklater cover like Slacker where they took a picture of the flyer on the pole... Not exactly like that, but like a picture taken of the graffitti on a wall instead of making it look like it was done in mspaint.

Graffiti on a wall would be too "street" and too 80's.

I saw the type as like a doodle in the back of a school year book, it has innocent, naive quality that is perfect for the film.

I don't know why I was thinking graffiti. Sorry, I mean a picture of the actual notebook.

The notebook idea could have worked, though I still think it is too literal.
(maybe carved into a school desk top could have been an alternative)

Anyway, I still think the D&C cover is brilliant, I especially love how The Criterion Collection changes from red to blue, is that a first?

I am waiting for the day when we watch movies by imputting computer chips into our brain with the movie we want. Given the small size of the chips, we will not have to worry about cover art on their little cases. Then, there will be no more debates. :D

A huge percentage of young kids have never seen a real DVD cover. All they know is nzb files, so I guess we are already there in some sense!

I kinda like the cover, but agree that the photos does not blend perfectly with the rest of it. One thing that does make me very happy is that CC finally started using colours again (Equinox+Dazed).

Can anyone explain how to extract the Young Mr Lincoln discs from their fiendish plastic housings? Do I a) push, b) pull, c) squeeze, d) all of the above? My poor arthritic fingers are being severely challenged. Thanks.

Press down in the center with index finger of one hand and lightly lift on edges with another hand, being careful not smudge disc. To get to bottom disc, place top disc to side upside down, thus allowing it get scratched. When crack in clear center of disc appears from necessary tugging, throw package against wall and commence weeping. After tear wells dry out, pick up the booklet and read the Sergei Eisenstein essay again.
