Playing The Joker has basically become the closest thing American culture has to playing Hamlet (and as many actors have won an Oscar for one as for the other).

I mean so many serious actors (Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and now Joaquin Phoenix) have interpreted the role that it’s starting to seem like some kind of ultimate role for a certain kind of actor. I’m not being entirely earnest, I’m riffing on Mark Ruffalo joking about following Edward Norton and Eric Bana in playing The Hulk: “... the way I see it is that Ed has bequeathed this part to me. I look at it as my generation's Hamlet.”

Nothing shocks me anymore. I think The Joker works better with me knowing less about him but who knows.

I mean, De Niro was the star of Dirty Grandpa, not sure why a superhero film let alone a prestige one would be shocking

My shock comes from De Niro joining what has been a rather routinely mocked project online and I'll concede to being biased because of it. I'd love for it to be good I just don't have any faith.

I wasn't trying to play devil's advocate or be discouraging toward Big Ben - De Niro truly will do just about anything thrown his way, his list of credits includes some real gems, of course, but it's lengthy and mostly full of questionable fare. This stands a chance of being one of the best films he's ever been in, which is wild when you think about it.

Surprised to hear this is the film getting mocked online when there are two Jared Leto Joker films and a Suicide Squad sequel on the way!

I love De Niro to death I'm just very skeptical. I certainly don't think a superhero film is beneath him (Or anyone for that matter.) it's just that with all these inundations with the Joker it feels sort of...like a joke? It will be interesting to see how this film is received here on this forum and with the the more general public.

I'm also guessing I should see The King of Comedy now.
