That reminds me that I caught a recent TV showing of the Lisa vs Malibu Stacy episode that cut out this moment, which left the characters just reacting to someone turning on their computer! (And almost made it seem filthier!)

An interview with Mike Reiss on the great podcast Chapo Trap House, discussing his new book Springfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets and Outright Lies From a Lifetime of Writing For The Simpsons.

I second this being a very enjoyable listen - and while I empathize with his reasons for disliking The Critic, I could never ever agree with him that it's anything but excellent

I don't know if The Critic was ever shown in the UK, but when I first saw the cross-over epsiode with The Simpsons in 2001, I assumed Jay Sherman was a real life critic (despite the "cheap cartoon cross-over" line!)

The Critic was never shown on mainstream UK TV (unlike even Duckman, which at least got its first two seasons shown on the BBC, double billed with Seinfeld), although I don't know if it turned up on satellite channels. I don't think it ever received a DVD release in the UK either.

(That's actually the opposite of my experience with The Royal Tenenbaums, where I have to admit that I assumed that Charlie Rose was one of those fake joke interviewers purely created for the DVD on my first viewing of the extras!)

Phil Collins said when he went on his first tour of America he truly thought that televangelists were comedians.

I don't know whether this guy should be a potential Darwin Award nominee or hailed as a hero. Maybe both.
Anyways, I'm fairly sure that the Flaming Homer had other things in it, the dark drink in the green bottle looked like red wine (or maybe cooked wine like Porto), maybe it would have calmed down the sweet minty taste?

Ugh - The Simpsons streaming will be moving to Disney's service upon its launch on November 12th

Very doubtful they're gonna care about carrying the commentaries and 4:3 uncut versions over, so. That dream is dead. And a service I would otherwise not give a shit whatsoever about that I now have to mull over subscribing to. Welcome to the future, everyone!

Going to hold onto my DVD's then.

That price is nice, but I won't give it long before it starts to inflate.

I have the DVDs too, but one television (possibly two) in our house won't have a disc device hooked up to it. We so rarely reach for discs anymore that it just doesn't really matter to have one hooked up. FXNOW has been taking care of our Simpsons needs just fine to this point, so I think just for convenience's sake it's going to be worth signing up for a year of this blasted Disney service.

I suppose I possibly know the answer to my own question but does Disney take care of their own animated stuff restoration wise? I don't think I've seen an older animated Disney film in a long time. I seem to recall they do something funny with the much older films but I'm not one hundred percent on that. Surely they'd put some care into The Simpsons? This is being advertised as a big deal.

They mess with the original cel scans so they look like modern perfect flawless digital coloring jobs on many of their features

Their restoration efforts have created a lot of unintentional mistakes.

That certainly doesn't inspire the least bit of confidence in me. You'd think Disney would be more, I don't know, aware of this?

Yea, but if they got them right on the first restoration then you would have no reason to buy the second restoration.

Call me naive but I have a feeling if Disney+ is aiming to have everything mastered to 4K, then the older episodes might return to being shown in their OAR. In such clarity, they could look worse cropped I think.
