To grant this weather the proper reverence, for the next 24 hours, Ang Lee's modern classic THE ICE STORM will be 50% off ($19.97) with the promo code SNODAY in our online store. Enjoy!
Man, why can't it be Sweet Smell of Success Blu-raying outside right now?

I bet "Ice Storm" is coming up on Criterion's BD upgrade schedule and this a chance for them to clear soon-to-be-a-tough-sell DVD inventory. Just sayin'.

Caught this (for the first time in a few years) late at night on Channel 4 yesterday during a bout of insomnia and remembered all over again how much I loved it. Any further word on a BD upgrade?

Has Criterion actually given any indication that a BD upgrade is likely?

I would think it would be a no-brainer if nothing else to capitalize on Lee's recent successes.

not to mention it's a regularly requested upgrade, too. would be criminal not to redo this (and maybe add Lust, Caution while they're at it)

Love this film (if not much else that Lee has done) and I'll be upgrading on day one.

This is a gorgeously appointed film, just lovely to look at. The cast and performances are all excellent and the dialog is rather good writing, beautiful direction.

And I absolutely hated the whole thing. There's something about the over-the-top symbolism or incessant liberal angst, or the approach with a seeming sense of self-seriousness that just rubs me the wrong way in a lot of respects. It reminds me of similar overwrought oh-so-important melodramas like The Deep End or The Door in the Floor. There's a lot of elements I individually liked, but the whole film was just a sort of absurd agony to sit through, the moments I liked best were when the film seemed to indicate it was aware of the potential humor inherent in the situations, but all too often everything was played straight.

So far I'm really enjoying the special features though.

You mean the 2001 crime thriller about supermom Tilda Swinton and her closeted son, directed by Scott McGehee & David Siegel? The one that's a remake of Ophuls' The Reckless Moment? If you do mean this one, not sure I agree on how seriously you imagine the film is taking itself.

Maybe the Deep End is not the right film. It was a female melodrama where she finds out her son is gay. (oh noes!)

You, uh, are aware of what "closeted" means? </Jeff Goldblum voice>

Right, but the directors play the melodrama of the situation more for suspense and deadpan black comedy than for the kind of serious overwrought emotionality that drove the Ophuls film.

hmm, I'll have to retract the comparison because the last time I viewed it was before I kept track of everything I watched and I suspect I'm referring to the wrong movie entirely.

Finished going through the extras other than the commentary. the interviews with the crew about their approach to the material are absolutely outstanding particularly the production designer and costume designer interviews. The interviews with the cast were pretty standard fare, overall. The Rick Moody interview helped to explain why I hated the movie so much, it's because of him,his worldview/personality, he set my teeth on edge for a solid twenty minutes, I will never read anything he's written after viewing that extra. The Ang Lee interview at Momi was full of great content and a pleasure to go through. The deleted scenes were all interesting, and all were weaker (or weakened) the rest of the film. Some like Tobey Maguire calling Cristina Ricci substantially weaken the film if left in.

This is a really impressive set, it's a shame the film is so terrible.

Anyone else have problems with the Blu-ray hanging at about the 1:40 mark? I just took it out of shrink-wrap and the disc looks clean, but it hangs on four different devices. Given the time could this be about the time of the layer change and maybe the dreaded bronzing issue? I just upgraded this from the B&N sale so I would've thought all of the bronzed discs were long gone from inventory.

Check the underside of your disc for the letters "BVDL". If they're present, your disc is not at risk for browning. If they aren't there, you should email Jon Mulvaney ([email protected]) and ask what to do next.

Thanks - I'll do that.
