Man, I'm glad Fox listened to reason and put some effort into "Beyond." Between pulling the rights from Criterion, and the rumors that Fox was ignoring the cast members' requests to be involved with the disc, I was a little worried.
Not what Criterion would have put out. But, except for the lack of nay deleted scenes/uncensored footage being included (although that's a big, if not unforeseen, exclusion), this looks relatively solid. I wonder if a trailer for "The Seven Minutes" will be included as an easter egg?

Criterion could include the original novel by Jacqueline Susann as an extra.
The extras for the first film seem very interesting. Screen test by Judy Garland? But the most interesting extra is the 1981 Mini Series. According to IMDb the run time is 233mins, seems unlikely they will fit the whole series on one disc which is already filled with extras. Anyone have any extra info about this? Seems hard to believe.

Wasn't Garland up for he Helen Lawson role ? How much of the film was shot with her ?

I haven't seen Valley of the Dolls so I cannot really recommend it to you but I have seen Beyond(...) and it is really one of a kind, to put it very mildly!
From what I've been reading online since I've first heard of these two, they could not be more different from each other and the similar titles are really the only thing that connects them. Nothing else! From there, you're on uncharted territory - Beyond(...) is one of the most insanely written, photographed, edited, scored, acted, you name it, films I have ever, ever seen in my life! And that ending...! OMG!

So, what you're basically saying is get them both, right? I speak for myself and AMB, that is. I've never been terribly interested in Valley of the Dolls but your description sounds down-right enticing! Should I plunge for it too? I was thinking of only double-dipping on Beyond(...) - I already own the R2 - but now you made me doubt myself...

Ratings? What ratings? Please don't tell me that someone on this forum chooses what movies to watch based on IMDb ratings. If so, there's a special place in hell reserved for you. And it's hot.LightBulbFilm wrote:I've never seen either of these, but ratings for them aren't that good. Are they worth a blind buy? Or just a rent.

Not IMDb,, I read it on a website about them. I don't go to IMDb for ratings, you can't trust them.matt wrote:Ratings? What ratings? It is Dionne Warwick and not only does it begin with that song but that song gets friggin' repeated for what seems like EVERY 7 MINUTES through the duration of the film.filmfan wrote:I think that's Dionne Warwick on the theme song.davidhare wrote:Valley begins with Diahann Carroll singing the theme to "Valley of the Dolls" (she's still alive thank god - just older than me!! but much more beautiful...)

The thing is a 2 disc edition, but I find it impossible to believe that they are including the mini series as they are listing it along with with the '94 soap which ran for 13 episodes! I wish they would release both of these treasures of badness (for Veronica Hamel and Sally Kirkland respectively), but I suspect we are getting at most brief excerpts.Solaris wrote:Criterion could include the original novel by Jacqueline Susann as an extra.

BTW, the original novel is brilliant -- the best trashy book ever written. A must read.

DVDdrive-in drops an amazingly thorough and engaging review of the Beyond disc! Worth a read:

2006 is half-over and Fox's lavish two-disc special edition of BVD has already stolen the title of Best DVD of the Year. Everything about this set is perfect, and not one DVD Drive-In reader should be without it. June 13, 2006 is a day that will go down in history for delivering an exceptional package of the greatest film Russ Meyer ever made, and a benchmark for any future special editions of any cult title. Mandatory!!
