The Power of Love (Valérie Lemercier, 2020)

The Bohemian Rhapsody fallout continues to accumulate, as musical biopics of Bowie and Celine Dion are being fast-tracked.

A musical biopic where a young teenager* is seduced and groomed by a much older man ... that Dion movie has Bryan Singer's name all over it!

* I kid, she was 12 when she met her 38-year-old future husband, so not even a teenager yet

I was going to say, in this climate, how do they expect to pull this off, especially since it didn't end poorly and they were together until his death?

It will undoubtedly get the Bohemian Rhapsody treatment, by which I mean it will be a highly sanitized version of her life (her early life in particular), made with the absolute full approval of Ms. Dion. It will be PG, it will feature at least one new "Oscar-worthy" new song from Ms. Dion, and it will do Mamma Mia level money. And if it gets nominated for Best Picture, I will force myself to watch it, but I guarantee it will be at a theatre that serves alcohol.

As with any movie in development, there’s a fair chance this won’t even get made. But even if it does, the media will by and large politely ignore the more problematic aspects, because the man is dead and Dion is both alive and probably willing to vocally defend him.

The twitter brigades who want to make a stink of it will do so but it’ll stay to that confined bubble.

So the Céline Dion film will be a fictionalization version. The character’s name won’t even be Céline Dion. Also I think it’s possible the film will be in French. I take back my predictions about the money and the awards.

By comparison the Bowie movie doesn't seem as bad since it'll just be one period of his career.

Yes - biopics, musical or otherwise, have a greater chance of being successful dramatically when restricting their time frame. This is true of Love & Mercy, Control (Ian Curtis' career arc was barely three years) and the newly-released Stan & Ollie which mostly sticks to just three or four weeks.
