I design stuff locally for some extra income. I notice these sorts of things...

PS. there are also no black lines above the logo line on the Criterion website one, save the tip of Linklater...

Criterion is getting a new logo in the next couple months, the C at the bottom of the newsletter is part of it. It's meant to complement the lowercase E which will be used for the Eclipse line.

The Criterion and Eclipse logos will look similar, one has the form of a lowercase C, the other has the form of a lowercase E. The circular forms will be applied to the DVD discs as well.

It's a nice identity system. Designed by Paula Scher, one of the best.

I think Criterion is tired of other companies ripping off their current logo. There's another DVD coming out this week (some tiny indie thing I never heard of before) which isn't even remotely subtle about it (they do it on the cover and the spine), although I can't for the life of me remember what it's called.

I do think it's unusual that they've changed their logo now 3 times over the past 5 years.

Or, rather, twice in the last seven years.

Rephrase:

"3 different logos" (instead of changing 3 times, true Narshty. The authorities request that everyone remain calm and stay in their homes. There is no cause for backache)

The first change was for the better, I'm certain this one will be too. you just better still be able to blatantly notice its a criterion by glancing at the front cover.

Status. I prominently display all my Criterions with their covers visible on my shelves so visitors to my lush pad will be amazed and want to copulate vigorously.

I think the Criterion logotype could be improved. Have you even noticed how it looks in the diminutive, the letters are so spaced out and fine they really disappear (yes, I know the logotype is supposed to reference the sprocket holes on a roll film). Also from a distance (eg. on a shelf) the logotype looks like a piece of fly dirt, it has no singular impact.

Time to let go people, embrace the new!

If I had time I'd plunk around w photoshop and extend koko's hand up to the hat-bill, and draw the missing arm extension to duplicate Delons pose-- koko's hand is in a very similar pose.
