I could not resist digging back in the thread for the film to solve this mystery

It did. It came out in May of 2005 and 299 wasn't released until July (and Flowers of St. Francis, #293, came out in August after being delayed). I always felt that one was, at least, intentionally reserved, with Disney probably wanting to get it out sooner than their schedule allowed.

What a pain it was to find that thread, by the way, since Grand Budapest Hotel has appeared approximately infinity times in this thread, which dominates the search results. I finally found it after chancing upon the Anderson filmmaker thread.

Mfunk’s altered quote actually links to my real write-up from that thread, if anyone else is trying to find it

FWIW, the corner of film twitter I’ve ended up being aware of seems to be freaking out not over Godzilla, but over the possibility of Roma (and everything that comes with Netflix getting this one more stamp of legitimacy.) Hard to imagine that not being a point of controversy for a while if that happens, given all the attention Netflix continues to get with their brushes with other institutions (AMPAS, Cannes, Spielberg and so on)

I would love to see Criterion and Netflix get cozy a la Criterion and IFC - a Ballad of Buster Scruggs Blu-ray would be a package designer's dream project

Without checking I’m sure Film Twitter is actually staying on brand and suggesting they release stuff like Nanette

The energy is so high (or is it the heat?… Right now 95 degrees… MotherFahrenheit!) to cool everyone down we could use Oprah to hand out each a #1000!

Agreed - it's too fucking hot. And about to get way worse. Criterion better make these announcements soon or we're gonna go full Summer of Sam in here.

Now I'm just reminded how sad I am Criterion didn't manage to snag Summer of Sam, especially with the prospect of the original cut. Still holding out hope for 25th Hour.

These are both Touchstone Pictures (aka Disney). Never going to happen.

Kino is currently prepping Summer of Sam for release and Criterion has licensed Touchstone titles in the (albeit distant) past.

Two days is one thing. But two days and one minute? I'd like to speak to Criterion's manager.

As with all recent bad pop-culture events, I blame Carrie Brownstein for this.

The most surprising spine #1000 would be that there is no spine #1000.

I wonder if there's one title that needs some final sign-off or something that is holding everything up.
