Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2019)

#1 Post by domino harvey »

We’re going to need a thread for this since somehow a comedy about a young boy whose imaginary friend is Hitler is shaping up as an awards player! Here’s the trailer

It looks incredibly derivative of one of your favorite films! And the marketing screams "the studio is terrified of any of this being taken the wrong way"

The Awards Watch forum has aptly called this “Moonreich Kingdom”— it def looks like a bad SNL parody of Wes Anderson

The weirdest thing about it is that it's based on a book.

Even weirder, that book is Hemingway’s the Sun Also Rises!

Funnier than anything in this trailer is that it appears Waititi has been given instructions by Fox Searchlight to badmouth Hitler to the press as much as possible, which is hilarious because obviously some suits somewhere thought a full-throated public rebuttal of Hitler by the director was needed. Like, it’s Hitler. No one who counts likes Hitler. Can you imagine exerting energy decrying to the press a man whose name has become a shorthand for evil? Then again, can you imagine making a movie where someone might think otherwise of your intentions?

Waititi's always a good bit of fun so I'm into this especially as it seems to follow many of his key interests. Also of note to highlight Disney's silliness even further is that Waititi is half Jewish.

Agreed, and Stephen Merchant's casting is enough to pique my interest further. I wasn't sure what to think of the film after the first trailer, but this newer one shows it's more than the goofy imaginary friend comedy I initially pegged it as.

Yeah, that second one definitely makes it seem like it has merit on its own rather than just as a gimmick or a Moonrise Kingdom knockoff.

I'm tentatively down for this. Making a feelgood Nazi comedy is a bit of a highwire act at the best of times, but one feels it's in safe hands.

This is a better trailer than the first and like Murdoch, it definitely got me more interested when I saw Stephen Merchant show up.

This is sitting at 49 on Metacritic and 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. A standout pan: Keith Uhlich gives it a 0/4 for Slant, calls it Marvel Presents Mein Kampf
There’s a hint of some genuine real-world unease in an early scene in which Rosie forces Jojo to look at a line of dead Jews hanging from the gallows. “Uck!,” the boy says, as if he’d just been forced to eat his vegetables.

Maybe second, as the reviews were published a few hours after all the pans for The Goldfinch!

I assumed everyone wrote that one off once those lame trailers came out, but you’re right, on paper at least that one sounded like a contender for a while too

One net benefit of this tanking is FSL may move up the actual Wes Anderson film’s release so they have an awards player this season

FSL has the Malick film which can possibly contend, if the passion is there from the highbrow bench.

Anderson's still busy wrapping up all the CGI for the 70mm IMAX cut

Apparently it played well to the academyish Telluride crowd. The Malick film has the advantage of being the only (on paper at least) traditionally epic Oscar bait subject matter film of the season that's being well received. The Irishman could also take some of that shine.

A lifeline for this movie. Its prospects looked bleak after the reviews came out. I was listening to Anna Thompson podcast and said that this movie will need something extra to survive through the end of the year. I think this award is it.
