Bertolucci said in an interview that "Before the Revolution" is coming from Criterion eventually. I imagine he already recorded an interview for it.

On the IMDB boards, somebody who claims to have close contact to people at Paramount said that both "The Conformist" and "1900" will be released by the end of the year.

What is the word on the Seven Samurai re-release? I remember seeing something about it in a past newsletter.

I think they're shooting for Fall 2009.

How do you do.

I apologise for having next to nothing new to say, but I presume information about it is rather scarce. Yet indeed, in the newsletter it says they still have a few month's work ahead of them before being able to release it. By the looks of it, it won't arrive before the late autumn, though I'd gladly be proven wrong.

You might be aware of the 'new look' rumours (fuelled by that very same newsletter you referred to) concerning Criterion changing their appearance a bit this coming autumn? In my mind Shichinin no samurai would make a sweet 'first release'. Yet perhaps they'll release Sanjuro and Yojimbo first?

With best regards,

You know....

I was thinking that the Olivier/Shakespeare box would make an interesting companion to say a Welles/Shakespeare box... would it not? What with Macbeth, Othello, and Chimes at Midnight not having decent DVD releases, and there's plenty of decent material out there on all three, not to mention PB.

Just a thought.

I would second that, a truly wonderful idea. Second Sight released both Othello (Region 0, by the way) and Macbeth in Europe, of which the former is a wonderful transfer, considering the circumstances/print condition. Naturally, the audio is almost impossible to perfect (it appears muted in several parts, and usually a bit out of sync, of course). What I've seen of the Macbeth transfer doesn't impress as much. Not to mention the lack of a decent Falstaff edition, this would make an amazing box-set.

We've had Welles for '05 and '06... perhaps next year?

With best regards,

What do you think the chances of us seeing Face to Face being released? I'm tired of watching my Super Happy Fun copy.

It says Paramount released it on both the big screen and on VHS. So, Criterion probably can't release it.

Am I the only one who thinks that Elio Petri is seriously misrepresented in R1 land? I mean, all his major works are MIA and having recently rewatched his Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, I for one am craving that someone releases it on DVD with the red carpet treatment. But there are plenty more worthy of that too:

Elio Petri is a fucking genius! I would die to get my hands on a copy of I Giorni Contati, I think the American title was Numbered Days though it was never offically released here. I saw it in a Petri retrospective here in Portland a couple of years ago. Lady Killer of Rome is great too!

How about R2 land with English subs? Even that would help!

If Criterion really is releasing Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, I hope it comes with the book, Spike Lee's Gotta Have It; Inside Guerrilla Filmmaking.

I checked it out from the library, it has the script for She's Gotta Have It, and his production diary, which I'm reading through now. It's really informative stuff, would be a great supplement. I'm assuming Criterion would already be aware of the book, if they were working on it, so I haven't e-mailed them a heads up about it, though I should never assume anything...

Definitely not. It would be great if Criterion released some of his work, but they've had their hands so full I've been more inclined to hope for No Shame to come through with Investigation of a Citizen and The Working Class Goes to Heaven (the only two films of his I'm familiar with, unfortunately).

At present there are only six Rosi titles in print in Italy, but none is Hands Over the City.

There's a French DVD (Editions Montparnasse) of Le Mani sulla città with removable French subs. See here

The Museum of Modern Art in New York showed Investigation this past weekend, along with a new Italian doc about Petri:

Elio Petri Revisited
May 7–10, 2006

To celebrate the arrival of a well-researched and entertaining documentary on the prolific Italian filmmaker Elio Petri, one of the preeminent political and social satirists of 1960s and early 1970s Italian cinema, the Department of Film and Media reconnects with its 2001 retrospective of the director by presenting his masterpiece, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970), a so-called stiletto satire.

Organized by Jytte Jensen, Curator, Department of Film and Media; and Antonio Monda, Professor, New York University. With grateful thanks to The Italian Cultural Institute, New York.

Elio Petri. Appunti su un Autore (Elio Petri. Notes on a Filmmaker). 2005. Italy. Directed by Federico Bacci, Stefano Leone, Nicola Guarneri. The film career of Elio Petri, who died in 1982 at fifty-three, is explored through interviews with directors, actors, collaborators, and other admirers of “Capoccioneâ€

So She's Gotta Have It has a scheduled release date in the UK on DVD for May 22nd... What does that say about R1?

Criterion versions of older Kieslowski films would be amazing. Blind Chance, No End, Double Life of Veronique would be great releases. Facets and Miramax did great releases with the Decalogue and the Three Colours Trilogy, but the earlier films would be great in a Criterion edition.

They did do Wajda films, I think gaining the rights to Kieslowski films would be not too difficult.

It might be. Kino just released a lot of these films and my guess they have the rights for at least 5 years. And Kino & Criterion seem to have a decent relationship with each other where they dont step on each others toes... Kino isn't exactly a Fox Lorber.

Release of BLIND CHANCE:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002C ... ance&n=130

all the Kino KK releases:

http://www.kino.com/video/artist.php?artist_id=1363

These all came out within the past approx 2 yrs so I wouldn't expect any CC's for the time being. (Favorable) Beaver review here.
