The Criterion Collection is required to collect sales tax on orders shipping to Alabama, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Washington and Washington D.C.. If sales tax applies to your order, we’ll indicate it during the checkout process.
First Amazon, then Deep Discount, and now Criterion. I guess that's the end of any tax-free BD purchases online.
I noticed that too! Luckily I have an office in New Jersey (which I didn't have until a month ago) but I think the Massachusetts tax is new for ALL internet orders, not just Criterion.

For once, being in Tennessee comes in handy.

Yeah the MA tax started sometime last year. It's super annoying especially being from Delaware where we don't have sales tax period. Luckily that $10 discount code that I got from being a Criterion Channel Charter member covered the tax of the Bergman set.

I live in WA and got hit by 10% sales tax.
But all things considered, this is still a better deal than B&N as I get 10% back through Criterion Store loyalty program and it cost nothing to join.

I think Illinois used to be exempt from its sales tax, because when I was away for school, I still had everything shipped back home in Illinois for that reason. It was a pain because depending on the timing of the sale, I wouldn't be able to watch them for months. (For example, if I was still in school, anything I ordered today might not be seen until the summer.) It was worth it for a huge order, but for smaller stuff, it made more sense to pay a few measly dollars than wait that long.

Yes, I thought about this after. Depending on b&n usage outside of Criterion, it may or may not be a better deal still for me.

Looks like it’s the first sale with sales tax for everyone (that was charged it) outside of NY & KY. I got charged 9.25%, which must mean that my local sales tax has increased (here in CA it’s anywhere from 7.5 to 10.25, depending on where you live),assuming that the store has all CA localities entered correctly. At least I got to use the criterion channel credit to dampen the blow.

I wonder why they started charging for other states now, as most retailers had been doing so for a while.

Possibly new state laws. That's been a recurring issue as retail stores are losing shoppers and more people are buying online - if state revenues are being hit hard, should they implement internet sales taxes? I haven't been following local news to that degree, so I can't say if each of these states has done that.

A Supreme Court decision last summer opened the door for many more states to charge online sales tax. Since the start of the year, DeepDiscount's been charging sales tax in most states, for instance.

Was a good way to use that $10 from signing up for the online service since I don't buy discs much anymore, LQ should love it.

That other forum is reporting the sale coming tomorrow.

Oops realized the store has its own thread.

God, I believe, wanted the sale to come in a couple more weeks, when Matewan drops. God doesn't watch Blu-rays or need the discount, of course, but wants more people to see Matewan.

If the sale starts on Haxan day, I think it's clear who's behind it

And of course, the B&N sale should start in a couple weeks
