Yeah, I assumed it was an original poster from the time.
Yuck.

I picked up the Dvd from Bo Ying, a cheapie Hong Kong dvd distributor. Actually a legal (non-pirated) Dvd in China, sold at the government stores for around $2, or double the pirate rate.

Not bad. Those Image Dassins are highly sought after. Now if you can grab the Image BRUTE FORCE (the Hellinger/Universal film Dass made before NAKED CITY) for $2, consider yourself among the luckier dudes on the planet. Those bad boys are commanding a fortune on Ebay. I have the same transfer of both films (believe they wound up being used for the laserdiscs), but on the old Kino VHS, which are quite good for those who havent seen the films yet or are looking for a stopgap until somebody (maybe CC, who knows?) gets around to releasing these two masterpieces on DVD. With RIFIFI, BRUTE FORCE is my favorite Dassin film.. and I fucking love NAKED CITY too.. definitely like it more than NIGHT & CITY.

I have a Russian NTSC DVD of Brute Force which is a cheaper alternative with the same Image transfer.

Back on topic, I prefer Naked City cover to the one they have for Brute Force. Maybe because I haven't seen Naked City yet.

Well, since Bo Ying has put out Rififi, Night & The City, and now Naked City, I will certainly keep a look-out for Brute Force. Thanks for the heads up.

Naked City was a little too straight-forward in its police procedural stroy-telling. You can see how it spawned a Tv series. Only a few gritty moments, mostly the opening and closing scenes. But very fine location work in NYC.

Bo Ying tends to specialize in 40's and 50's films (I just picked up Born Yesterday and Love Me or Leave Me), and also Hitchcock. Quality is limited to pan-and-scan with no extras. Hell, sometiems the end credits are cut off. But for a cheap price you get to watch the film.

Clutch Cargo-mouth freaks me out, but apparently not as much as Clutch Cargo-eye.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but...

Yeah, I know. The cheesy green light around the alien is pretty horrible. Oh, and I suppose that kitten's head floating on top of its blended body could rub some people the wrong way...

A Charlotte Gainsbourg blow-up doll? Count me in! David, can you pick me one up during your Paris sojourn?

Saw this in a shop today. Yet another poor, and strangely similar, Jane Eyre cover. This one featuring George C. Scott:

Nothing to do with the cover, but is "I Am You" really the best German equivalent they could come up with for "Vice Versa"?

Actually, that would be a great idea for another thread: asinine film title translations. If memory serves, Saving Private Ryan was released in Germany as something translatable as "A Soldier Named Private Ryan", which isn't bad...if you know absolutely nothing about the film.
