About the My Own Private Idaho cover, I love it! Shame that I'm in the minority. I'm very happy that River Phoenix is featured mainly on the cover.. instead of sharing it with Keanu Reeves. Simply because at heart, the film is Mike's personal journey.
About the whole PINK thing, keep in mind that Gus Van Sant wrote his first novel titled PINK.
Mike is dressed in salmon-pink. He is a salmon in search of his home.
It's a very beautiful cover.. a lone boy on the road. With the pink swirls and woodblocks. It is an odd, surreal combination - which definitely sets the tone of the film. Can't wait!

I really like the Idaho cover. The pink swirls look fine, and the worn-out look is great. I can't wait to see it in my hands.
Although the Kagemusha is perhaps one of the lesser covers in the catalogue, I still think it looks great.
If both are gatefold, I'm sure everyone will be happy with them when they're in your hands, and the artwork inside will affect the overall look.
I'm actually amazed at the stir both of these covers have created. Surely both will be incredible DVDs, and the coverart looks fantastic in comparison to the crap most other studios release.

pretty sure.
it has the swirl but not the border or pink lettering. most of the pink has been axed.

ok gotcha. i thought the discussion was still centered on the old pic's link.
To be honest I didn't even notice the swirl before. The pink border dominated the previous image. I wonder at what stage they changed it. Personally I like the cover, it has the look of a weathered book.
on a side note:
I remember being in middle school when a local radio station came to my school and gave away prizes for answers to trivia questions. One of the questions was something like "What young actor was found dead at a nightclub owned by Johnny Depp" (what a question for 13 year olds) I was the only one who even knew who RIver Phoenix was so I got a Channel Z T-Shirt!! =D> hahaha actually now that i think about it, that's kinda creepy

I wish that was me getting mashed in the corner by Alain Delon.

I prefer the Japanese cover for L'eclipse, what's the point of having Alain's back on a cover
. I like all 3 covers so far, apart from the one for the River, which i really dislike, that background colour is nasty.

Ack - another example of serious Criterion-itis in the covers this month. Their designers have found a remarkably conventional vein within their "unconventional" covers. Tinted still, suitable typeface, director's name above the title - done. You can see them striving for something evocative and enticing, when the finished covers just end up looking kind of vague and anonymous.

I can sense an opportunity for a Criterion Forum fan photograph homaging the L'Eclisse cover! It depends if hektor is interested and matt is willing to wear a wig though!hektor wrote:I wish that was me mashing Monica Vitti in the corner.
