New Forthcoming Foreign/Art/Independent Films on DVD

Vol.1

Vol.2

As originally conceived by Acquarello and continued by Donald Brown, this list will be selectively confined to upcoming DVD releases of Classic, Foreign (i.e., non-English language films released on discs WITH English subtitles), Independent, Art, Experimental, and Silent Film from the US and abroad. The list is not exhaustive by any means, but attempts to highlight major releases that might otherwise escape notice.

I am extremely grateful for suggestions about how I can make the list more useful, legible, etc; corrections of my inevitable errors; and especially for information about upcoming releases from around the world that I may have overlooked.

Note to readers in the US and Canada: Most DVD releases from other countries will contain restrictive region encoding and/or may utilize a different video standard (PAL) than that used in the US (NTSC). Such discs may require special or modified playback equipment. More information on this topic can be found here and here.

I will attempt to update the list weekly.

Let me be the first to say Kudos to adding a list of releases by director's and a huge THANK YOU! (and second to give you props overall in this thread :)). This is one feature that I KNOW I will be using more than the other lists for sure. In fact I already noticed that I missed a recently released Bergman disc and am going to put in an Amazon.co order ASAP.

One suggestion; the John Ford grouping looks really cluttered, as does the Rohmer. Perhaps you can do some sort of bullet-point or layout having the boxed set listed, then indented the individual titles, and then note that all the titles that are available seperately are indicted by a certain colour or an * or just "all titles available individually" at the header? I dont know if the html tags would make it a mess though, it might. This could be used for all future box-sets as well. It'd just make it look a bit cleaner.

Also, under the Ford releases you don't have Mogambo :).

That Day is coming from Kimstim/Kino. Border Incident is being released on July 18. All these Film Noir films on July 18 are only available in Film Noir 3 boxset.

The Lost Patrol, The Informer and Cheyenne Autumn will be exclusive to John Ford Boxset.

Boomerang! was cancelled and is not going to be released on June 6th.

A-HA! I was checking the "wrong" list as these technically haven't been "officially announced". They're not up on their site's "dvd video news/forthcoming" page or official "Future release" page (or private newsletter) yet. This along with the MABUSE tidbit were announced together on a semi-formal newsgroup chat. You can't really find any evidence of a dvd release on these anywhere on the web.

Thanks! New Yorker is a new distributor for Milestone. They got a divorce from Image.

Don't Come Knocking got a release date from Sony in region 1 - August 8.

I hesitate to question you, Gregory (your info is usually right on the money), but Boomerang! is still listed for pre-order at Amazon, DVD Empire, Laser's Edge, the Big DVD List, and the Fox store, all with the June 6th release date. Did Fox pull it within the last few days?

This ought to be good news, but I've heard terrible things about the transfers of Pathfinder's Chabrol collection. Does anyone know anything about the quality of their other releases?

The same was true for me, but I just checked it and it has now changed back to "In Stock (ships in 24-48 hours)"

The DVD release of Boomerang! is living up to its title. While it's available for preorder at DVD Planet again with a release date of June 6th, it's gone from Deep Discount and Overstock, and Laser's Edge has changed its release date to TBA. Yet it's still available at DVD Empire, Best Prices, Best Buy, Borders. The Big DVD List now lists it as "Cancelled."

I suspect this will be a bit like the aborted release of Ed Wood a few years back. ATTN: collectors, speculators, and Ebayers (and anyone else trying to make a quick buck).
