Brilliant. I was surprised when the 1996 Q&A wasn't in the initial announcement and I'm very glad to see it on there. But Crash! (1971, 18 mins) was a pipe dream that I never thought Arrow would manage to get from the BBC - I know Turbine was in contact with Harley Cokeliss who was keen for it to be restored and released, but they weren't able to get the BBC on board with it. Any info on whether it has been restored or if it's at least better than the quality of the recording on YouTube at the moment?

Good to see a couple of Cronenberg shorts on there as well, though The Italian Machine (1976) would seem to have more thematic relevance.

What a package, and heartening demonstration of a commitment to ethos on Arrow's part since they hardly had any competition with their supplements already commissioned. So at this point, the Criterion is really only worth getting for superfans who want both commentaries..

I'm not big on commentaries whatsoever and I was planning to also get the Criterion for some weird completist thing and I am not trying to ignite an argument here but there is really very little to no reason at all to get the Criterion

I’m also getting the Arrow, because while I’d like to listen to Cronenberg’s commentary, the Arrow package is just head and shoulders better, plus there’s always a chance the Cronenberg commentary winds up streaming on the Criterion Channel one day.

I'm surprised by the inclusion of only 2 Cronenbeg shorts, the same that Turbine and Carlotta included in their releases, but not Camera, which they also included. I thought the update was bringing all 3 shorts and actually originally misread it.

On the other hand, the other short films look very intiguing.

Camera is already on our edition of Videodrome, which is still in print, so I’m guessing the producer thought it would be redundant to include here too.

It won't. The feature is going on there at 85mbps.

I suppose at best the Criterion will top out at 35mbps. This is going to be a slam dunk from Arrow.

I've only ever received US releases from DIabolikDVD, but they also sell select foreign titles, such as this, and I've never had any cause for complaint.

I think the maximum possible video bitrate for BD-Video is only around 40Mbps. Dual-layer UHD discs apparently max out at 108Mbps, though I don't know if that's only for video or for all streams.

Zavvi is the best in terms of shipping cost if you are importing from UK.

I just preordered it from diabolikdvd it was 40.99 altogether but I like their general service/speed of handling orders.

David M would probably be the most suited person to answer things like that, but yes, from the beginning, max date rates for UHD have been said to be dependant of the type of UHD. UHD-50 have a lower max data rate than UHD-66 and UHD-100 have the max possible data rate for UHD. UHD-100 were quite slow to adopt originally because the tech (IIRC) wasn't 100% finalised from a production point of view (and it was expensive as hell). IIRC, Batman v Superman was the very 1st one. Now it has become much more widespread, and many movies that are a bit long or embark extras on the UHD are using UHD-100 discs. Lionsgate have been using some, Warner, Universal, Arrow, Studio Canal, and others too, though I couldn't say in an accurate manner how often they're used.

I'll try to look into the BDA white papers for UHD and see if the specs are more detailed there.

I feel stupid for having to ask this, but does the 4K UHD edition also include a Blu-ray? Arrow's site says there's only 1 disc in the package, but Zavvi's says 2.

Arrow's Facebook announcements of the release imply there is not a Blu-ray disc with the film in the 4K UHD edition. If there is a second disc, maybe it's a Blu-ray for the special features? Amazon UK also says there is only one disc.

Zavvi is incorrect - the UHD does not come with a Blu-Ray disc, and all the extras are on the same disc as the feature.
