According to Twitter, Criterion illustrator Jason Polan has died.

He was the one who was responsible for the monthly and New Year's clues, I think. Maybe this is related to why there wasn't a New Year's clue this year?

Yes, he was (it's Polan by the way). And there actually was a New Year's clue this year--we just all complained about its meagerness, and now collectively all feel awful about that

He got his revenge on all of us by taking the mystery of whether that one clue was for Il sorpasso or Midnight Cowboy to the grave, at least
